Ms. Murphy has worked in the cafeteria at Alberta Smith for 15 years. Her love for cooking shows in her food and her big smile that greets us everyday for lunch. Ms. Smith also volunteers for Meals on Wheels on the weekends. She truly is exceptional. We are so lucky to have on our team. Thank you Ms. Murphy for all you do!!

I want to thank so many of you who volunteered for the Jamestown field trip. Unfortunately only four parents can go, but check out our classroom website for some other exciting volunteer opportunities. The school and county are also looking for volunteers for Career Day. Please see link on our class website. I also want to thank all of you for quickly turning in your student’s permission slips. We will start food webs this coming week, and obviously continue on with Jamestown in Virginia Studies.

3. Where we are at and where we are going?
I am very happy with the progress we have made, and the awesome grades on quizzes and unit tests. Keep up the great work! I have included the next set of standards we will be tackling. As you can see above English standards are ongoing except for non-fiction which will be covered on going in social studies and later in February.
Current Curriculum
Mathematics:
4.5 The student will a) determine common multiples and factors, including least common multiple and greatest common factor; b)add and subtract fractions having like and unlike denominators that are limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, and simplify the resulting fractions, using common multiples and factors;
c) add and subtract with decimals; and d)solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition and subtraction with fractions and with decimals.
Science:
4.5 The student will investigate and understand how plants and animals, including humans, in an ecosystem interact with one another and with the nonliving components in the ecosystem.
Virginia Studies
VS.3 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the first permanent English settlement in America by a.) explaining the reasons for English colonization; b) describing how geography influenced the decision to settle at Jamestown; c) identifying the importance of the charters of the Virginia Company of London in establishing the Jamestown settlement; d) identifying the importance of the General Assembly (1619) as the first representative legislative body in English America; e)identifying the importance of the arrival of Africans and English women to the Jamestown settlement; f)describing the hardships faced by settlers at Jamestown and the changes that took place to ensure survival; g)describing the interactions between the English settlers and the native peoples, including the contributions of Powhatan to the survival of the settlers.
