17 Seattle SIM Membership
Membership & retention How do you find new members? Annual conference. This year prospect list is 200+ Member referrals Sponsor/Vendor referrals What are your membership criteria? “Leadership role in IT/Technology” Is anything changing due to changing markets or the changing nature of IT? Seattle is very Tech Company centric (relative to other cities) Strong presence of Tech giants: Microsoft/Amazon/Google/Facebook/etc Large number of Cloud startups and mid-size Tech companies Seattle SIM needs to recruit Tech executives to stay relevant. How do you find new members?  Mainly we invite non-members who came to the Summit to attend SIM meeting at no charge, this year the prospect list is over 200.  Try before you buy. Membership Criteria - Leadership role in Technology Restrict Sales : Practitioner role to 25% sales : 75% practitioner. Currently very long waiting list for Sales Sometimes gets confusing who is in sales. My example – Technologist responsible for delivery of Cloud infrastructure, but I work for a company that sells cloud services to people like me. Other examples – Startup CEO.

Do sponsors fund Chapter operations, philanthropy, or both? Sponsorship to dues revenue: Two big revenue generating events each year are conference and golf tournament Last year conference generated ~$40K for Seattle SIM. This year about $30K expected. Golf tournament has been variable. But most years has brought in ~$20K revenue for chapter. Attract Sponsors in a number of ways. Often they come to us. We ask members to refer their favorite vendors. Each chapter meeting has a dinner sponsor and a bar sponsor. $1,900 for dinner sponsor. $800 for bar sponsor. Currently rethinking this approach Revenue is used for chapter operating expenses and community outreach.

22 Seattle SIM Uniqueness Alternatives to Seattle SIM
What makes your Chapter different from other organizations in your community? Alternatives to Seattle SIM Technical “Meetups”. Not always relevant/useful for senior IT/Tech executives Vendor run events. It’s a trap! Hounded by Sales people. Difficult to make meaningful connections For-profit CIO networking group. Feels mercenary. Giving Back not part of group DNA Seattle SIM difference - Designed to meet needs of senior IT/Tech executives Focus on technical, organizational, career, leadership topics relevant to senior IT/Tech executives High quality networking with IT/Tech executive peers “Safe Space” from vendors. No sales solicitation Focus on Giving Back to community Three Core Pillars for Seattle SIM High-quality professional networking Education/Leadership Development Community Outreach Seattle SIM is the only org in town that satisfies needs of IT executives. Many meetings for technical topics. Too low level for IT execs Many sales run events. Will get trapped and hounded by sales folks No meetings run for Technology executives that are not Vendor driven. -- Seattle SIM is a safe space. Can have candid conversations with peers. Protected from Sales bombardment Result is high quality professional networking. Good education for Seattle SIM members and their staff Added community outreach focus last year. Members have limited free time. Want to combine professional activities with give back to community.
