START OF PROFESSIONAL HOTEL INDUSTRY-PRE INDEPENDENCE ERA
Charles Ville in 1861 and Savoy in 1895 in Mussourie. Clarkes Hotel and Savoy Hotels established in Shimla in 1898 and respectively. Taj Hotel established in Bombay in 1903 In 1934, Rai Bahadur took over Clarks hotel ( earlier known as carlton Hotel ) . In 1938, Rai Bahadur took over Grand Hotel of Calcutta.

INDIAN HOTEL INDUSTRY-POST INDEPENDENCE ERA
The first Prime Minister of India , Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, recognized the need to build luxury hotels for foreign dignitaries, which led to investment in Hotel Ashok, New Delhi. Government of India established ITDC in 1966 with aim of establishing hotels across India to meet the challenges of economic growth. In 1982, Asian Games were organized in New Delhi which led to establishing seven hotels by ITDC , which include Kanishka, Ashok Yatri Niwas, Akbar Hotel, Lodhi Hotel, Hotel Ranjit and Qutab Hotel.

LICENSING OF HOTELS UNDER SOCIALIST SYSTEM
The Government of India granted license to Taj Palace, Asian Hotels-Hyatt Regency, Le Meridien, and Surya Sofitel hotels which were built in New Delhi.

GROWTH OF HOTEL INDUSTRY
ECONOMIC REFORMS of 1990’s: India became attractive destination for foreign direct investment. “Incredible India”: The campaign resulted tremendous increase in the number of tourist arrivals. The current size of the Hotel Industry is 3.8 Billion, Current grows is 12% rate. The supply of hotel rooms is 110,000 The requirement is 150,000 rooms ( atleast)
