1 Think about today’s topic from pictures

2 Physics and technics. Astronomy.
Aim of the lesson: to know about role of physics and its impact on the technical and social progress Learn about stars, comets, planets, constellations and etc. Able to distinguish between space objects

14 Which of the sentences in Erkan’s essay are incorrect ?

15 Answer

16 Shooting stars/Falling Stars
When meteoroids fall through the Earth’s atmosphere they cause a light path where they collide with air molecules. This is called a meteor, shooting star or falling star. As the meteor collides with air molecules it heats up and some of it melts away. The part of the meteor that is left after it falls through the atmosphere is called a meteorite.

17 Meteorites often leave a deep hole behind when they crash into Earth’s surface called a crater.
As the Moon doesn’t have any atmosphere it is easy for meteoroids to crash into the Moon’s surface. This is the reason the Moon has many craters on its surface

18 Planets Unlike a star, a planet is not a light source, so it is cold.
Planets reflect light from their own stars. Stars are much larger than the planets that orbit around them.

19 The planets that turn about our Sun are nearby Earth, and always reflect light from the Sun
To be able to tell whether a heavenly body is a star or a planet you need to find out which part of the sky it is in If the position of the heavenly body changes from one night to another, it is a planet

20 Different between stars and planets

21 Some school pupils have been to a lesson called ‘The solar system and beyond’. They are discussing what they remember from their lesson. How many pupils were very interested in the lesson? A) One B) Two C) Three D) Four

22 Answer Since stars are so far away, they appear to twinkle. Elif is correct. Comets are collections of dust, rock, ice, and gas. They are not stars. Irfan is correct. The Moon is not a star and its position changes from one evening to another. It cannot be used to change direction. Fatih is incorrect. Planets do not produce light; they are not light sources. Oya is incorrect. This means that two of the pupils were interested enough to remember all the information. B

23 Which of Selimhan’s friends is good at astronomy?
Selimhan’s friends discuss what he says about a heavenly body he observes in the sky. Which of Selimhan’s friends is good at astronomy? A)Ayhan B)Bey han C)Ceyhan D)Erhan

24 Answer The object is twinkling and doesn’t change its position; it must be a far off star. Although the Sun is a star, it is so near that it doesn’t appear to twinkle. The Moon doesn’t twinkle and it changes its position in the sky. D

25 A) Only I B) Only II C) I and II D) I,II and III

26 Answer Planets do not twinkle, but stars do.
Stars are enormous distances away from Earth compared with the planets. Planets are not heat or light sources, they reflect heat and light from the Sun. This means only I and II are correct. C

27 Light Years The distances between heavenly bodies is so enormous that the metre cannot be used to describe it. This means a new astronomy unit is needed to describe it. This unit is called a light year. This is the distance light travels in one year.

28

29 How many seconds does it take light rays from a star 5 light years away to reach Earth?

30 Answer
