1 Parallel Structure

2 What It Is Parallel structure is using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas are equally important. Parallel structures are usually joined by coordinating conjunctions like “and” or “but.” Example 1: The Agricultural Adjustment Act subsidized farmers for reducing crops and provided loans for farmers facing bankruptcy. Example 2: The Agricultural Adjustment Act subsidized farmers for reducing crops and had provided loans for farmers who faced bankruptcy. paragraph 5 of the article “The New Deal”

8 Varied Phrases A noun phrase is a phrase that acts as a noun within a sentence. An adjectival phrase is a phrase that describes the noun. A verb phrase is a phrase that assigns a verb to the subject of the sentence. An adverbial phrase is a phrase that modifies the verb in the sentence.

11 Important Terms Cohesion: how well the paragraphs and sentences link the claims and evidence of a text together into a coherent (sounding logical) whole. Cohesion is important in revision and should be done between paragraphs and sentences Transitions are words and phrases that are used to create cohesion.

With widespread and long-lasting effects, the Great Depression ruined Americans’ livelihoods, yet it also drove them to be resourceful and use government assistance to survive. Example 2: Roosevelt’s first act as president was to declare a four-day bank holiday. Congress drafted the Emergency Banking Bill of The banking system was stabilized. The public’s faith in the banking industry was restored. He signed the Glass-Steagall Act, which created the FDIC, federally insuring deposits.
