1 WELCOME TO BIOLOGY EOC BOOTCAMP

2 BIO EOC CAMP: IMMUNE SYSTEM

3 Immune System and Disease Fighting Infectious Disease
Acquired Immunity

4 Leukocytes & the Immune System
Fighting Illness Leukocytes & the Immune System 2 responses: Specific– direct; targeted; go after a specific pathogen; lag time (vaccines & antibiotics) Nonspecific – general; inflammation; immediate

5 3 lines of defense FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE: Skin, Mucus membrane, Saliva, Stomach acid… SECOND LINE OF DEFENSE: Inflammatory response brought on by Histamines; includes FEVER = slows down/stop growth of pathogen PHAGOCYTES = Ingest bacteria (phagocytosis) INTERFERON = Inhibits virus replication THIRD LINE OF DEFENSE: (SPECIFIC) B CELLS = Make antibodies (memory cells) T CELLS = Attack and Kill ANTIBODIES = Attaches to antigen and mark them for death

6 2nd Line of Defense: Phagocyte
phagocytosis.

7 Fighting Illness: Bacteria vs. viruses
Session 5 Fighting Illness: Bacteria vs. viruses Bacteria – are LIVING and can be killed (antibiotics) Viruses – are NONliving and canNOT be killed (can only treat symptoms and try to prevent infection) Public Domain Image (CC0)

11 Factors Affecting Blood Flow

12 What you need to know Blood flow is affected by… Blood Pressure Blood Resistance Disease Exercise

16 EOC Camp Day 1

17 Population Dynamics and Human Impact

18 Vocabulary Review Emigration= number of organisms EXITING a population
Immigration= number of organisms going INTO a population

19 Predator-Prey Relationships
Predators eat prey As one increases, the other will decrease shortly after and vice versa Predator-prey graphs always show fluctuation (up and down)

20 Carrying Capacity The maximum number of individuals an ecosystem can sustain

21 Human Impact Human activities often pollute the environment
Why is this bad??? Because it DECREASES BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity is having variation (differences) among living things. It’s a good thing! More biodiversity = healthy and MORE STABLE ecosystem Human activity often involves polluting environments: this can cause one species to take over while the rest decline, or it could cause the carrying capacity of the ecosystem to decrease. Human activity can also introduce invasive or non-native species. This species may compete with a native species and use up the resources that they need. Human activities often DECREASE the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Biodiversity is GOOD! More biodiversity = healthy and MORE STABLE ecosystem.

22 Human Impact Human activities can also bring invasive (or non-native) species into an ecosystem Why is this bad??? BIODIVERSITY AGAIN! Remember the rabbits in Australia… Human activity often involves polluting environments: this can cause one species to take over while the rest decline, or it could cause the carrying capacity of the ecosystem to decrease. Human activity can also introduce invasive or non-native species. This species may compete with a native species and use up the resources that they need. Human activities often DECREASE the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Biodiversity is GOOD! More biodiversity = healthy and MORE STABLE ecosystem.

23 Human Impact Human impact can also use up the natural resources in an area Deforestation This can cause the carrying capacity of animal and plant populations to DECREASE What’s carrying capacity again? Human activity often involves polluting environments: this can cause one species to take over while the rest decline, or it could cause the carrying capacity of the ecosystem to decrease. Human activity can also introduce invasive or non-native species. This species may compete with a native species and use up the resources that they need. Human activities often DECREASE the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Biodiversity is GOOD! More biodiversity = healthy and MORE STABLE ecosystem.
