1 TRAINING & COMPETENCY This PowerPoint was revised on September 21, 2015 Notes Pages Only This course should be a minimum of 8 hours If a second Instructor is brought in to help with the Practical they must also be a Certified Fall Protection Instructor in Good Standing with Fusion Safety Services Print all of the documents in the Class Exercise Folder as those are your cheat sheets (answers to the class exercises). I would laminate these and have for quick reference.

2 Competency A “Competent worker” means: Adequately Qualified,
Suitably Trained and, With sufficient experience to safely perform work without supervision or with only a minimal degree of supervision. P7

4 Oil Sands Safety Association
OSSA is anon-profit organization made up of representatives from Syncrude Canada, Suncor Energy, Shell and Canadian Natural Resources, as well as volunteer members from the labour providers, unions, area contractors and learning providers. P7 OSSA is a non-profit organization that is funded by CNRL, Syncrude, Shell Albian Sands and Suncor. Their purpose is to standardize training in the region allowing workers to work on any one of the 4 sites by taking OSSA Accredited courses. Prior to OSSA workers would have to take training all over when they went to a new site.

OSSA Objectives are to bring together the Regional Stakeholders (contractors, labour providers and government) to: Identify, develop and implement strategies to support their vision of “An Incident Free Workforce” and, To work together to create a common safety culture P7 OSSA is a non-profit organization that is funded by CNRL, Syncrude, Shell Albian Sands and Suncor. Serves Training Providers with direction as to the minimum training program content requirements to meet the needs of the OSSA member companies. In order to be OSSA Accredited you must have authorization in writing from OSSA that the Training Program meets their minimum requirements. P7

The OSSA Accredited Courses are: Basic Safety Orientation (4-Hours) Fall Protection (8-Hours) Confined Space Entry and Monitor (7-Hours) Fire Watch (5-Hours) Several other courses being considered P7

8 DUE DILIGENCE “217.1 of the Canadian Criminal Code states: Everyone who undertakes, or has the authority to direct how another person does work or performs a task is under legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm to that person or any other person arising from that work or task”. 9 DUE DILIGENCE It holds Corporations and Organizations criminally liable for negligence as a result of the actions or inactions of their senior managers. P6 Once it is part of the Criminal Code it is no longer a Bill however most people still associate with this as Bill C-45
