11 Strategies for teaching SPAG
Structure and timetabling (daily practice, whole class and intervention groups, practice tests) AB Activities (some examples) HC - paper based activities for you to develop and use. Punctuate sentences for two different meanings ‘Dear Glenn’.

12 Punctuation – does it matter?
Dear Glenn, I want a man who knows what love is all about you are generous kind thoughtful people who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior you have ruined me for other men I yearn for you I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart I can be forever happy will you let me be yours Gill

13 Dear Glenn, I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy – will you let me be yours? Gill

15 Where’s Wally? How could you use a page from ‘Where’s Wally?’ to teach SPAG?

16 Where’s Wally? Correctly punctuated postcard.
Prepositions/adverbials to identify or find items/Wally. (In the distance…, behind the train…) Conjunctions to direct a partner to find Wally. Main and subordinate clauses

17 SPAG through Newspapers
Expand your vocabulary. Ask children to browse through the newspaper, find five unfamiliar words and look up the definition of each. The children could create a dictionary page containing the five words and their meanings. Look in the newspaper for specific examples: words with a particular suffix or prefix compound or hyphenated words words in the past, present, and future tenses prepositions plurals Writing headlines/captions that might include a set criterion: question, statement, exclamation. Conditionals to describe a picture (it could be, it might be…) Subjunctive from pictures or articles (If I were at the scene of the crime, I would…) Ask children to blank out certain words for a partner to replace, eg all of the verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions) Transcribe articles into another tense. Cut up and rearrange clauses in sentences.

18 Fruit and Veg Nouns p5 Jumpstart
As the banana chugged through the beans, she stared out of the cucumber. Tiny strawberries clung to the tomatoes and, in the melon, lemons grazed. A potato ran beside the lettuce, gurgling on its way to the radish. As she looked out of the cucumber, she notices the dark pineapple drifting overhead.

19 Resources Twinkl, studyzone, CGP 10 min tests, WWTBM and practice tests Pie Corbett Jumpstart Grammar TES SPAG Talk for Writing website APPs Sparklefish and MadLibs
