Meet Stumpy- SEA LIFE’s resident Smooth Ray!
All About Stumpy
Over14 years ago, Stumpy was rescued from the wild by the team at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium after she had her tail and barb forcibly removed, subsequently rendering her defenceless against other ocean predators. Stumpy was also found swimming inside the shark nets at Balmoral Beach. As such, ‘Stump’ was taken to the Darling Harbour attraction, where she was been residing in the attraction’s Shark Valley Oceanarium.
How do you move a 270 kg Smooth Ray?
After a year of planning the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium team will be relocating Stumpy to her new home at Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary, where she will be housed in a new tank alongside other Smooth Rays like herself.
Due to Stumpy's awkward size the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium team had to purpose build a mesh net that will safely secured her in. Stumpy s size is equivalent to moving a king size mattress and as heavy as two refrigerators. So the team had to use a special hoists, we will crane her into a large container and then transport her via truck to Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.
