27 Where is boasting then. It is excluded. By what law. Of works
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also,30since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

Summary of verses The law of faith prevents boasting We are justified by faith, not works of the law The unity of God demands a single means of justification Faith does not void the law Faith establishes the law

Justification by Works
Justification by Faith James 2:24 Romans 3:20 Jeremiah 17:10 Rom. 3:22 Jeremiah 32:19 Rom. 3:24 Ezekiel 33:20 Rom. 3:28-30 2 Cor. 5:10 Rom. 4:3 Galatians 6:7-8 Rom. 4:5 Ephesians 5:6 Rom. 4:11 Revelation 2:23 Rom. 4:16 Revelation 20:12 Rom. 10:9-10 Job 34:10-12; Ps. 28:4; Jer. 25:14; 51:24; Hos. 12:2; Matt. 25:31-46; John 5:28-29; 2 Cor. 11:15; Eph. 6:8; 2 Tim. 4:14 Rom. 5:1; Rom. 5:9; Rom. 9:30; Rom. 11:6; Gal. 2:16; Gal. 2:21; Gal.3:5-6; Gal. 3:22; Gal. 3:24; Eph. 2:8; Phil. 3:9
5
Survey 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only (James 2:24) 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight(Romans 3:20)
6
Survey 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.(Jeremiah 17:10) 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; (Romans 3:22)
7
Survey 19 You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for Your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jer. 32:19) 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,(Romans 3:24)
8
Survey 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his own ways.”(Ezek. 33:20) 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law (Romans 3:28)
9
Survey 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (2 Cor. 5:10) 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”(Romans 4:3)
10
Survey 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life (Gal. 6:7-8) 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,(Romans 4:5)
11
Survey 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. (Eph. 5:6) 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, (Romans 4:11)
12
Survey 23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. (Rev. 2:23) 16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (Romans 4:16)
13
Survey 12 And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. (Rev. 20:12b) 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)
14
Faith Establishes the law
Biblical scholar Dr. Brad Young explains: “The words ‘place on a firmer footing’ is a far better translation of the meaning of the words in Greek. The Greek term histemi, ‘stand’ or ‘place on a firmer footing’ is the equivalent of the Hebrew word kiyem, ‘cause to stand’ or ‘make to stand through proper interpretation.’ Paul desired to place Torah [the law] on a firmer footing through faith” (Paul the Jewish Theologian, 1997, p. 97)
15
Faith Establishes the law
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Ok Paul, how am I going to do this? V.16 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Gal. 5:13-14)
16
Faith Establishes the law
12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets (Mt. 7:12) He who does not love does not know God, for God is love (1 Jn. 4:8)
17
Faith Establishes the law
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mt. 22:37-40)
18
Faith Establishes the law
Love God Love Neighbor You shall have no other gods before Me Honor our father and mother Forbidding worship of idols Forbidding murder not take His name in vain Forbidding adultery Remember His Sabbath day and keep it holy Forbidding stealing Forbidding false witness Forbidding coveting
19
Faith Establishes the law
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love (Galations 5:6) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness (Galations 5:22)
20
Faith Establishes the law
We are justified by God through faith in Jesus Christ Faith or faithfulness is also a fruit of the Spirit The fruit of the Spirit is love Faith works through love Love is the fulfilling of the law Paul therefore denies nullifying the Law when he teaches justification by faith Paul affirms faith establishes the law (a firmer footing)
21
Negative Use of The Law 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain (Galations 2:21) 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace (Galations 5:4) .
22
Positive Use of The Law 12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good…22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man (Romans 7:12, 22) 31Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law (Rom. 3:31).
23
Fulfilling The Law 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)
24
Fulfilling The Law 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love (Gal. 5:6).
25
Fulfilling The Law 3As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm (1 Tim. 1:3-7).
26
Judged by Works 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:11-15).
27
Be Careful 9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”(Lk 18:9-14).
28
9Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord
9Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, 4 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; (Phil. 3:1-9).
