2 I. PRE-UNIFICATION GERMANY
A. 1860: German area was divided into 39 SEPARATE STATES. 1. People shared a common, language, culture, and history . 2. German people had been left divided at the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars (1815).

3 II. OTTO VON BISMARCK a. PRIME MINISTER of PRUSSIA, (Prussia -2nd largest of the German States) b. Wanted to unify Germany into ONE STRONG AUTONOMOUS (self-governing) NATION.

11 I.CONSTRUCTION OF THE GERMAN EMPIRE
UNDER BISMARCK Schleswig & Holstein Prussia & Austria fought Denmark. 2.Prussia & Austria won the war. Denmark lost Schleswig & Holstein. 3.Schleswig was controlled by Prussia. Holstein by Austria.

 b. Austro-Prussian War 1866- Prussian army entered Holstein. After seven weeks Austria was defeated. Two states belonged to Prussia. Northern part of Germany was united. the North German Confederation was established.

14 c. FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR 1. Two Reasons for Franco-Prussian War Napoleon III was afraid of how rapidly Prussian power was growing. Fighting over the Spanish throne. 2. Spanish throne had been vacant since 1868. 3. Spain offered the throne to the German prince. 4. Napoleon III convinced Wilhelm to reject the throne.

5. The EMS DISPATCH stated Wilhelm’s rejection of the Spanish throne. Bismarck, however changed the document and published a fake letter. 6. July 19, Franco-Prussian war had begun. Germany won in 1871. 7. France gave Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. France was also forced to pay a lot of money to Germany. Germany was united.

20 II. MAINTAINING AND EMPIRE
1. January 1871: Bismarck became the first German chancellor of the Second Reich. 2. King Wilhelm I of Prussia became the Kaiser/emperor of all Germany. : Creation of Three Emperors’ League: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. 4. Constitution set up a 2 house legislature.: Bundesrat (upper house): appointed by the rulers of the German states. Reichstag ( lower house): selected by universal male suffrage.

22 Concluding Journal Entry
“Germany did not unite itself; rather, it was conquered by Prussia.” Assess the validity of this statement. Otto von Bismarck is considered one of the most influential leaders of the nineteenth century. In Germany, Bismarck is still one of the most loved figures in Germany history. WHAT IF Bismarck was never made prime minister? WHAT IF he was not given a position in the German government? How would Germany have been affected? Explain in a brief 3-4 paragraph essay.
