Why the NextGen Initiative?
The proportion of older workers is expected to grow four percent annually between 2000 and 2015 The proportion of younger workers is shrinking CPS Human Services Replacement gap starting in 2006: Workforce shortage of 10 million Greatest turnover in aging workers will be in executive and managerial occupations Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Greatest turnover in aging workers will be in executive and managerial occupations

The Up-and-Comers NASPAA data suggests that approximately 14,000 MPAs/MPPs graduate and enter the workforce each year Approximately 4,000 consider state and local government In the 1960s, approximately 30 percent of Harvard Law graduates entered public service; today that number is 3 percent

Local Government Management Fellowship Program Partnership between ICMA, NFBPA, NASPAA, and IHN Goals: Generate interest in local government management among recent graduates Provide new opportunities for recent graduates Place 100 Fellows by 2008 Pilot Year 2004; Six Fellows Placed 2005; 17 Fellows Placed (14 new, 3 renewals) 2006; 19 Fellows Placed (13 new, 6 renewals) So far! Three hosts still pending
