How to take Cornell Notes 01/24/14 Step 1: For Starter 1.) Get out a pen and sticky notes: Write the title of the notes across the very top line Skip 2-4 lines from the top. 2.) After you skip those lines, draw a straight line down the page, dividing the page into 1/3 on the left and 2/3 on the right. (you can fold paper to help if you want)

How to take Cornell Notes 01/24/14 Step 2: What goes where 1.) In the 2-4 lines at the top, you will write in the Essential Question. You may write this on a sticky note if you prefer. The essential question is a series of questions about what you will learn from the notes. 2.) Anything on the screen or whiteboard will be copied down on the RIGHT SIDE of the page

How to take Cornell Notes 01/24/14 Step 2: What goes where (Cont.) 3.) Use both sides of the page in your notebook. Be sure to draw the line on the correct side of the page.

How to take Cornell Notes 01/24/14 Step 3: Summary 1.) After the notes are done, you will write a summary of the information from the notes. This summary needs to answer ALL of the components from the essential question. 2.) Summary should be approximately 4-6 sentences. No less than ¼ of the page and no more than ½ of the page

1.) Once you have written your summary, review your notes. Identify anything that you feel might be included on the test, Things that confuse you, or things that you make a personal connection with. Highlight them!!! 2.) Once you have highlighted them, on the LEFT side of the page, create a question to help you remember the information, clarify your confusion, or remember your personal connection 3.) You must have at least 3 questions

Your questions should be a mixture of thinking skills: Level 1: Who, What, When, Where- easily remembered facts Level 2: Why or How- things that require you to remember and do something with it. Level 3: Predictions, Inferences, Analysis- Information that you don’t know for sure, but that you can use to fill in the blanks

-If I write in ITALICS, you do NOT need to copy -No Summary or No Questions? NO CREDIT -If I ask you to include a graph or other piece of information from your book, you must include it -If you are present in class, but do not take the notes, you get a ZERO - All powerpoints are uploaded the school’s website after we take them in class for absence
