1 Energy! It makes things move

2 Objectives SWBAT Identify the seven forms of energy Define energy

3 What is Energy? Objects move because of energy
Energy: the ability to make things move Energy is NOT like matter Energy has no mass and does not take up space

4 Forms of Energy 1. Chemical energy: holds atoms in molecules together. Chemical energy can be released during chemical reactions; such as the burning of wood Ex: H2O2 : hydrogen peroxide 2. Electrical energy: movement of electrons through matter. Ex: electricity

5 Forms of energy continued…..
3. Heat energy: is the vibration of particles within matter. Faster the particles vibrate, the more heat energy they have. Ex: think of some examples and share with the class. 4. Light energy: energy carried by light

6 Forms of energy continued…..
5. Mechanical energy: the energy of moving things Ex: a pulley, washing machine, air conditioner, generator 6. Nuclear energy: holds the protons and neutrons together in the nucleus.

7 Forms of energy continued
7. Sound energy: sound energy vibrates air molecules. The vibrating molecules move tiny bones in your ear. The message is then interpreted by the brain. Sound energy vibrates through matter; water, air….. Ex: make a loudspeaker and say hello through the opening…what do you feel as your voice moves through the paper?

8 Can energy change forms?
Energy can be changed, or converted, from one form to another. For example, a hot air balloon: The air that fills the balloon is heated The heat energy causes the air molecules inside the balloon to move very fast Warm air rises above cool air: The temperature inside the balloon is much different than outside the balloon so this difference creates “lift” or causes the balloon to rise In other words the heat energy used to lift the balloon is converted into mechanical energy to move the balloon. What other energy, not mentioned in notes, is used to move the balloon?

9 Potential and Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy: Energy of position; stored energy that is not being used Kinetic Energy: Moving energy or energy in action

10 Potential Energy A roller coaster sits on top of a hill. It is about to speed down the track, but it has not moved yet. It has energy because of where it is. Once the roller coaster begins to move the potential energy converts to Kinetic energy. Substances like wood, coal, oil and gasoline have stored energy because of their chemical composition. They can burn. When they burn they give off heat and light energy

11 Potential Energy

12 Kinetic Energy The potential energy of the roller coaster at the top of the hill is converted into kinetic energy as the roller coaster speeds down the hill

13 Conservation of Energy
The sum of KE and PE remain constant at each successive position
