Freshman English [授課教師] Week 2: 跨文化能力(跨族群文化能力)
Text 1: Culture Shock (10401蔣豐維) Race and culture differences American Headway P.50~51 [授課教師]
2
Teaching Plan A) Students will learn to recognize value differences across cultures. B) Students will learn to respect and appreciate these differences, and consequently communicate better with people from various backgrounds.
3
Culture Shock 1. Begin the session with the question "cross cultural romance." Ask students what do they know or think about this to arouse interest.
4
Culture Shock 2. Move on to elicit the key concept of "culture shock." Encourage students to share their knowledge and experience of the topic.
5
Culture Shock 3. Give students the handout of "Culture Shock" (Attachment 1). Give students 1 minute to read it on their own first.
7
Culture Shock 4. Go through the T/F questions below. Ask students to recap and summarize the story.
8
Culture Shock 5. Ask for volunteer to do a role-play to reenact the scene. This will boost both students' interest and speaking ability.
9
Culture Shock 6. Ask students to think of some examples and real cases in Taiwan. * As students may give stereotypical answers like "stinky tofu" or "chicken feet," be encouraging and urge students to think about other examples.
10
Culture Shock * Students may focus on the experiences of a typical European or American, which is exactly the time to direct their attention to other ethnic groups we usually somehow slighted ("新住民" for instance.)
