17/04/2018 Creating A New Presentation 3 A PowerPoint slide is not like a Word document. You don’t just type on it. A slide is created in layers: The bottom layer is the design. Next are text and graphics boxes. Then there are layers of text, animation, sound, transitions, etc.

7 17/04/2018 Contextual Tabs Contextual tabs: appear when you choose particular PowerPoint elements Provides further relevant options when required As a result, the ribbon doesn’t get too cluttered and commands stay hidden until they are needed Elements which can be selected are text boxes, charts, shapes, clipart. Example: - Select a shape and the (Drawing Tools) Format tab appears

9 17/04/2018 Slide Layout "Layout" refers to the way things are arranged on a slide. A layout contains placeholders, which in turn hold text, tables, pictures etc. Apply a slide layout In the Slides pane, select the slide for which you want to apply a layout On the Home Tab, click Layout from the Slides group.

10 Entering Text In Your Presentation
Click in the text boxes to start entering your text PowerPoint automatically wraps the text to fit the size of the text box The size of the text will automatically adjust to fit in the box on bulleted lists as well.

11 17/04/2018 Inserting a new slide Click the New Slide button from the Home tab to insert a new slide into your presentation. Another way is to go to the Slides or Outline pane on the left side of the screen and click where you want a new slide, then press the Enter key. To duplicate a slide: Right-click on the slide after which you want to insert a new slide and click New Slide. Same method can be used to duplicate or delete a slide.

12 17/04/2018 Drawing Tools Tab Drawing Tools tab is a contextual tab – becomes available when clicking on drawings, clip art, WordArt, pictures, etc. Adjust group – brightness, contrast, recolor, etc Picture Styles group – picture border, picture effect, picture border. Size group – crop, resize height and width Insert Shapes group – lets you draw and edit pre-selected shapes. Shape Styles group – shape fill, shape outline, shape effects WordArt Styles group – text fill, text outline, text effects

13 Using WordArt 1. Select Insert tab, then click on the WordArt button.

14 17/04/2018 Inserting Clip Art You can insert clip art by selecting the Insert tab and clicking on Online Pictures. You can use the Search feature to search for clipart by typing in what you are looking for in the text box. For example, “canary." Click on the clip art you want.

17/04/2018 Inserting Pictures Click on the Insert tab and click on Picture. This allows you to navigate to folders where you have pictures. Click on the picture to insert it into your slide.

17/04/2018 Inserting Videos and Audio Inserting your own Video/ audio clip: Insert Tab > Media group > Video / Audio Navigate to folders where you have sound / movie files (AVI / MPEG Change the timing of a longer sound clip, such as a piece of music, so that it plays through 1 or all of your slides. Embed or store the presentation and movie / sound files in the same folder, or it will not work.

17 17/04/2018 Creating A Set of Notes 1. At the bottom of your set of slides is a frame that says “Click to add notes”. 2. Type in notes that you may wish to verbally use along with your presentation. 3. The notes may be printed on a page with each slide. 4. To go back and edit the notes, just select that slide under Normal View or choose Notes View and edit from this view.

19 17/04/2018 Viewing The Slides Click on View tab, then Normal to see the original setup we saw when PowerPoint opened. Click on View tab, then Slide Sorter to see your entire set of slides. You may drag slides to change order. To start a presentation of your slides: Slide Show tab, then From Beginning. Click the mouse to advance. Shortcuts in the status bar: Slide sorter Reading view Normal view Slide show

20 Previewing the Slide Show

21 17/04/2018 Slide Transitions You can set transitions between your slides by using the Transitions tab. Different Slide Transitions types are available from the Transition to This Slide group You can : choose different transitions, modify the speed of the transition, give it a sound if you wish, decide whether or not you want the slide to advance automatically or manually with a mouse click

17/04/2018 Slide Design Using templates: To apply a template to your presentation slides: View tab > Slide Master Add the desired template, e.g. to add a footer: Insert tab > Header & Footer Tick “Footer” and enter your text “Apply to All” - will apply the change(s) to all the slides in the presentation “Apply” – will apply the changes to the slide that is currently selected Slide Master tab > Close Master view

25 17/04/2018 Slide Master The slide master is an element of the design template that stores information about the template, including font styles, placeholders sizes and positions, background design, and colour scheme. Placeholders: Boxes with dotted or hatch-marked borders that are part of most slide layouts. These boxes hold title and body text or objects such as charts, tables, and pictures Themes: Various themes available with different colour schemes and designs.

17/04/2018 Slide Master 2 From the View Tab, choose Slide Master Notice the Slide Master tab appears in the far left corner. Here any changes you make to style, layout, fonts, etc. will be applied to all your current slides and any future slides you make
