Jack paused. “I want…I want…horns!”
Writers use quotations around written conversation between characters, or dialogue.
End punctuation marks such as periods or exclamation points go inside the quotations.

Day 2
Writers use quotation marks around dialogue to show when the character begins to talk, and stops talking. The quotation marks go around what they character says.
When they landed, the head pirate climbed out of the boat and yelled, “Ahoy that, matey! Be this the Spanish Main?”
“No,” I said. “This is the North Beach.”
“Shiver me timbers!” the pirate said. “We must have taken a wrong turn at Bora Bora.”
Writers assign dialogue to help the reader know which character is talking. The words to assign dialogue are outside the quotation marks.
Find another place where dialogue is assigned…
So in narrative texts the quotation marks help the reader understand. They signal to the reader when characters are talking, and when the narrator is telling the story.
