Nicolas Rolin (1376/1380–1462), who was chancellor to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, is worshiping the Infant Jesus, who blesses him, holding a globe of the world as a sign of his power over Creation. The central role of Mary, mother of Christ, is emphasized by her royal crown, which is carried by angels. There is an imaginary, idealized landscape and architecture symbolic of a basilica. The painting is now in the Louvre in Paris

The skull symbolises death. The skull formed by the cubes represent religion's opposing beliefs of death. The worshipers below represent followers. The entire painting can represent that opposing religions lead to murder.

Turn to page 3 image 1.3 Heretics = a person who holds an opinion opposite to the rest of society. How has society changed from what we see in image 1.3 to what is happening in image 1.4 and 1.5? Is this the case all over the world?

15 Patrons of Art Italy was made up of several city states.
The states were run by wealthy families. They surrounded themselves with artists to paint portraits, make sculptures and monuments to show their wealth. Without these families there would have been no renaissance.
