5th Grade Curriculum Night

Grade Level Expectations
Students will be prepared for all classes everyday. Students may not call home for homework. Students will produce quality work all of the time. Students will show respect for all adults they come in contact with. Students will respect classmates’ learning by remaining seated quietly during instruction and raising hands to ask questions.

Report Cards Grades are determined by percentages.
F 59 and below All grades are earned by your children and recorded by teachers. An awards assembly will be held at the end of the school year. Students receiving all A’s, all A’s and B’s, or perfect attendance will receive a medal at the assembly.

Attendance It would be very helpful if you could make certain that your child knows how they are getting home before they get to school. Relaying a message to a student from an or a call to the office can disrupt classroom learning. We understand circumstances can arise during the day, but would appreciate your assistance in this manner.

Birthday Celebrations and Parties
Kyrene District Policy is that students are not allowed to bring in treats to share on their birthday. Students are welcome to bring in treats (store-bought) to share during the following celebrations only: Fall Party Winter Party Friendship Day (Valentine’s Day) Party End of the Year Party

Friday P.A.T. / Detention Hall
Friday P.A.T. (Preferred Activity Time) is available to students who: Have completed and handed in all class work and homework assignments for the week on time.

Daily Schedule Math (Students start the morning in their homeroom and they may rotate to other teachers) 8:00-9:30 Language Arts 9:30-11:55 Recess/Lunch: 11:55-12:35 Social Studies/Science 12:35– 1:45 (except Wednesdays) Special Areas: 1:45-2:35

What are the Common Core Standards?
An expectation of students at each grade level, putting students, parents, teachers, and school administrators on the same page, working toward shared goals. A progression of learning expectations. While most states already had mathematics standards in place, they vary widely from state to state in their coverage and level of rigor.

Aligned with college and work expectations (College and Career readiness) Rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills Aligned with other top-performing countries so that all students are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society Source:

Reading Students will read and analyze selections from a variety of genres including, non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Instruction will be for the following targets: Literary Elements Reading Strategies Vocabulary/Root Words Author’s Purpose Inferences Fact and Opinion Draw Conclusions Point of View Compare and Contrast

Writing Instruction will focus on the following genres: Summary
Personal Experience Narrative Expository Essay Literary Response Research Report Business Letter Personal Letter Creative Writing Fairy Tale Poetry Fantasy Historical Fiction

Assessing Writing Writing will be graded using the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory 6 Trait Scoring Rubric. The traits include: Ideas and Content Conventions Organization Voice Sentence Fluency Word Choice Assignments will be graded for one or more traits, however, not all assignments will be graded for all traits.

Math There is no math textbook this year but our resources include Engage New York, Georgia Units, and Teacher Created Resources Operations and Algebraic Thinking Numbers and Operations in Base Ten Numbers and Operations-Fractions Measurement and Data Geometry Problem Solving Students should already have their multiplication facts memorized in order to be successful this year!

Social Studies The text used is United States: Making a New Nation, a Harcourt Social Studies text. Units include: Map Skills Early Native Americans Explorers Colonial America The American Revolution Famous Person Biographies
