K9MBQ ANTENNAS – Can’t Have Too Many!
6 – 20M: 4 EL STEPPIR Beam on US Tower ~ 75 ft 10-160M: 265 ft WINDOM (Off Center Fed Dipole w/ Vertical piece) 10, 15, 20, 40M: HUSTLER 4BTV Vertical w/ ~ 30 grd Radials 40M: 4 SQUARE VERTICAL SYSTEM Phased 40M ¼ Wave Verticals w/ ft Radials under each (Grd Mounted) 80M: Inverted-V for CW (Low) end of Band; Center on ~72 ft 80/160M: COAX Inverted – L w/ 6 Elevated Radials Receive Only for 40, 80, 160M – K9AY LOOP System “Poor Man’s Beveridge” Use Solo when transceiver has external Rcv Ant connection I Use both solo and in Diversity Receive with a second Receiver (my K3 has two) and the transmit Ant on the main Receiver Excellent hearing!! Include a Separate Receive Ant in your station if your Transceiver has the Jack . . . New HAMs - First Pri - Windom; 2nd - Elevated Vertical

BACKGROUND Why a COAX INV-L? – Get DXCC on 160M
Windom 160 (265 ft) in use – OK on 160 (80+ countries), but too low Mar 2012 QST Article by Scott – K4VWK on Resonant 80/160, elevated radial Coax Inverted “L” got my attention No Capacitance needed at Base I had the space Always wanted to try and Inverted “L”
4
CONFIGURATION “L” 65 ft #14 Wire, plus extensions Vert is 65 ft RG8
Radials – 100 ft #18 Electric Fence Wire
5
TUNING LENGTHS K4VWK K9MBQ - 1: 70 FT - 2 : NA - 3: 4 FT - 4: 8 FT
Top at ~ 60 ft vs 65 ft, w/ coax loop at bottom Elevation and Angle of “L” change Loading

ANT HEIGHT EFFECT
7
BANDWIDTH 160 W/ #1 (70 FT L) – 1820 TO 1910, SWR < 1.5:1
8
MECHANICS K9MBQ used a plastic electric box cover
Alligator clips from Radio Shack
9
K9MBQ GROUND CONNECTORS AND BASE MOUNT
10
CENTER SUPPORT AND GROUND ROD CONNECTION
11
SECTION JUMPERS AND HI-TECH RADIAL INSULATORS

HOW DOES IT PLAY? 160: Excellent into EU and Caribbean
80: Armchair QSOs in DX Window into EU & VK/ZL ARRL Phone Contest – 6 new countries on 160 on SSB Resonant, no tuner; 1500W load w/o issues. Got 160M DXCC!
13
BOTTOM LINE Easy to construct – no unique parts, but need a 65 ft support Plays well – Good DX Antenna No Extensive Ground Radial System My 40M 4 Sq has 6K+ ft of #14 wire in radials Vertical COAX Insulation Prevents Tree Conductivity; it is the Loading Capacitor Manual Band Changing tolerable Glad I Built!!
