ByFusion The ByFusion process converts 100% recycled plastic waste obtained from the ocean into an alternative building material called Replast Replast can be made with all different types of plastics and can be customized to multiple shapes and densities. (4) The mechanism used to complete the Byfusion process is 100% modular and was created to be affordable, efficient, and clean thus the process is almost 100% carbon neutral and non-toxic. The purpose of Byfusion is to create a cost effective product that could be used by anyone. (1)

Relevance We chose to learn more about ByFusion because they are a company who are actively researching and developing a process that will not only provide a sustainable product but will simultaneously aid in cleaning up one of the greatest areas of pollution on our planet: our oceans. This is a significant area to research because it is pretty unexplored at the moment. This topic impacts our environment the most because ByFusion targets the massive patches of garbage in the oceans by cleaning up the plastic pollution to form a sustainable building material through a clean and low-emission manufacturing process. The possibility of Replast becoming a standard building material is even more feasible now because of initiatives being implemented by companies like Boyan Slat’s Ocean Array Cleanup.

History ByFusion is a relatively new process that was recently funded on the crowd-funding website Indiegogo.com with most research and development being done by the company that created it. University research into ByFusion and Replast is virtually nonexistent, meaning there is a lot of potential research to be done Testing on Replast blocks has been done but due to the rapid improvements in the field, additional testing and measurements are being taken to ensure the product meets specifications (1) ByFusion was created to tackle the problem of increasing plastic waste in the oceans

Future Research One constraint is that the machine is nearly 40 feet long and about 67,200 lbs. This provides major challenges as far as storing the machine.(1) The patented process can use almost all types of plastic (#1-7), however it can not use 100% Polystyrene (#6). This type of plastic will not work due to a lack of structural integrity. They are working towards improvements in compression, R value, and shear strength in the replast so that they can ensure that they meet the US and international standard levels for building materials. Byfusion is eco-friendly being nearly 100% carbon neutral, and also it has been developed to be used in many different forms ranging from walling to roadway barriers. However, like many things with potential, it mostly depends on how well funded the project. In the scenario that it is well funded, I think the project will have great success, especially if they partner with another company such as Boyan Slat’s Ocean Cleanup. (2)(5)

Conclusion ByFusion is a process designed to eliminate plastic waste from the oceans and transform it into a building material called Replast. This process is significant because it is a sustainable method of controlling a major form of pollution while providing an environmentally friendly option to construction companies. Replast and ByFusion are relatively new, thus not much research has been done outside of the company itself, testing is still in progress to confirm that the product is up to American standards. With proper funding and successful testing, the product can enter the American market and expand immensely.
