LAND AREA: 11,627 km2 (4,489 mi2) POPULATION: habitants (July 2016) LANGUAGE: Arabic (but English widely spoken) INDEPENDENCE YEAR: 1971 CAPITAL: Doha (Baladiyat ad Dawhah) POLITICAL SYSTEM: Unitary constitutional or an absolute monarchy (country is ruled by the Al Thani family since 1825) Qatar is a founding member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a member of the Arab League, United Nations and many other international and regional organizations. 04 From the concept to results ... the ODC at Qatar National Library

7 SOCIETY AND EDUCATION IN QATAR: QNV 2030
Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 is a development plan launched in October 2008 by the General Secretariat for Development Planning in the State of Qatar. The aim of QNV 2030 is to "transform Qatar into an advanced society capable of achieving sustainable development" by 2030. Four pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 (first published 2008) are: 1. 8 SOCIETY AND EDUCATION IN QATAR: HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
One of the pillars of the QNV 2030 is to support education. To meet this goal, the government of Qatar established a program of increasing the number of educational facilities such as: nurseries, schools, colleges and universities. A few facts: formal education in the state of Qatar begun in 1956 primary education is obligatory for every child and free in public schools there are approx. 338 international schools (public and private) there are 8 colleges there are 11 universities (the oldest one is the Qatar University founded as a teachers' college in 1973; the other are satellite campuses of foreign universities – American, Canadian, British, French and Dutch) 08 From the concept to results ... the ODC at Qatar National Library

Expectation: higher education and research need access to an international information and to develop of a national knowledge base. Foundation: the new Qatar National Library will provide access to knowledge. 1. EDUCATION 2. SCIENCE AND RESEARCH 3. Qatar National Library (QNL) is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community development. The official Qatar National Library announcement ceremony took place on 19 November 2012. Some features of the new building: An area of m² ( ft²) Is constructed as one big room with three main terraces Will provide unprecedented immediate access to all books Its 120 meters long bridge will lead library users to the conference hall, the multimedia room and study carrels Will have a book transport system, compact shelves in the basement and self-service for check-in and check-out 14 From the concept to results ... the ODC at Qatar National Library

GOALS TO ACHIEVE: To establish a new Library which integrates research, national and public library functions from a scratch To build knowledge capacity for a society in a rapidly changing environment where information technology is developing with high speed and different formats to fulfill the Qatar National Vision 2030 To get to know special and general interests of male and female Qataris as well as expatriates from different language communities and cultures To provide library services to research and education institutions in the country through the purchase of national license of databases needed, as well as keep up-to-date about new digital resources from around the world in all fields and monitor already purchased database usage To build a highly qualified, specialized and subject-oriented collection staff to raise awareness about the role of library and its programs as well as to understand and preserve the nation’s heritage. To get to know all needs, librarians have to communicate with the society by promoting the knowledge about the Qatar National Library, developing the network of libraries in the country, and collecting all legal deposits of Qatar and research output of Qatari researchers from all over the world. It provides free access to its online resources for everyone who lives in the State of Qatar. 20,911 QNL registered users (September 2016) All users who join the Qatar National Library may access numerous databases, e-books, standards and e-journals with one access code. From the start it was considered as a priority and a significant requirement to have a large collection for the Opening Day Collection for QNL. How to get there: Vendor selection - due process & duration, awards; Set Ups - mobilization, trainings; Profiles - approval plans, firm orders; Restricted and sensitive titles?
