Theravada School: Traditional Buddhism Mahayana School: Religious Buddhism Vajrayana School: Tantric Buddhism or Tibetan Buddhism Zen Buddhism: Meditative Buddhism Animated picture list with color text tabs (Intermediate) To reproduce the SmartArt effects on this page, do the following: On the Home tab, in the Slides group, click Layout, and then click Blank. Press and hold CTRL, and select the picture placeholder and text shape (top and bottom shape) in one of the objects. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Design tab, in the Create Graphic group, click Add Shape, and then click Add Shape After. Repeat this process one more time for a total of five picture placeholders and text shapes. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic dialog box, in the left pane, click List. In the List pane, double-click Horizontal Picture List (fifth row, second option from the left) to insert the graphic into the slide. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt. Select the graphic. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Format tab, click Size, and then do the following: In the Width box, enter 9.25”. In the Height box, enter 4.44”. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Format tab, click Arrange, click Align, and then do the following: Click Align Middle. Click Align to Slide. Click Align Center. Select the graphic. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Design tab, in the SmartArt Styles group, do the following: Press and hold CTRL, and then select all five text boxes in the graphic. On the Home tab, in the Font group, select Corbel from the Font list, and then enter 22 in the Font Size box. Select the graphic, and then click one of the arrows on the left border. In the Type your text here dialog box, enter text. Click More, and then under Best Match for Document click Moderate Effect (fourth option from the left). Click Change Colors, and then under Colorful click Colorful Range – Accent Colors 2 to 3 (second option from the left). Select the rounded rectangle at the top of the graphic. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Format tab, in the Shape Styles group, click the arrow next to Shape Fill, and then under Theme Colors click White, Background 1, Darker 35% (fifth row, first option from the left). Click each of the five picture placeholders in the SmartArt graphic, select a picture, and then click Insert. To reproduce the animation effects on this slide, do the following: In the Animation group, click Effect Options, and under Sequence, click One by One. On the slide, select the graphic. On the Animations tab, in the Animation group, click the More arrow at the Effects Gallery and under Entrance, click Float In. On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animations group, click Animation Pane. In the Animation Pane, click the double-arrow below the animation effect to expand the list of effects, then do the following to modify the list of effects: In the Timing group, in the Duration list, click Select the first animation effect, and then do the following: On the Animations tab, in the Animation group, click the More arrow at the Effects Gallery and then click More Entrance Effects. In the Change Entrance Effects dialog box, under Moderate, click Basic Zoom. In the Timing group, in the Start list, select With Previous. Click Effect Options, and under Zoom, click Out Slightly. Press and hold CTRL, select the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and 11th animation effects (effects for the text shapes), and then do the following: Also in the Timing group, in the Duration list, click On the Animations tab, in the Animation group, click the More arrow at the Effects Gallery and then click More Entrance Effects. In the Change Entrance Effects dialog box, under Basic, click Peek In, and then click OK. In the Animation group, click Effect Options, and under Direction, click From Top. Press and hold CTRL, select the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and 10th animation effects (effects for the pictures). In the Timing group, in the Start list, select After Previous. To reproduce the background effects on this slide, do the following: Right-click the slide background area, and then click Format Background. In the Format Background dialog box, click Fill in the left pane, select Gradient fill in the Fill pane, and then do the following: Click the button next to Direction, and then click Linear Down (first row, second option from the left). In the Type list, select Linear. Under Gradient stops, click Add gradient stop or Remove gradient stop until two stops appear on the slider, then customize the gradient stops as follows: Select the first stop in the slider, and then do the following: In the Position box, enter 0%. Select the last stop on the slider, and then do the following: Click the button next to Color, click More Colors, and then in the Colors dialog box, on the Custom tab, enter values for Red: 130, Green: 126, and Blue: 102. Click the button next to Color, and then click Black, Text 1 (first row, second option from the left). In the Position box, enter 71%.

3 Spread of Buddhism Original Buddhists were a community of monks called the sangha (later included nuns) For 45 years, members of the sangha wandered all over India teaching Buddha’s ways Buddha wanted sangha members to meet up from time to time to come to agreements on things like scripture, discipline, behaviour, etc. “Stay on the same page” After Buddha’s passing, members of the sangha were no longer able to come to an agreement, and two separate schools of Buddhism were formed

4 Theravada School Found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Theravada = “way of the elders” Older, more conservative, more traditional Do not recognize any scriptures written after the Tripitaka (Triple Basket)

5 Theravada School This school focuses on Buddha’s teachings moreso than Buddha himself They do not worship Buddha as a god; they see him as a man responsible for the teachings on which they base their lives These Buddhists rely on individual meditation and insight in order to attain nirvana Those who do achieve nirvana are called Arhats and are seen to represent ideal spiritual perfection

6 Mahayana Buddhism The “Northern School”, found in China, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. This school considers the Buddha to be a divine being They believe the heavens are populated by buddhas that people can pray to They heavily emphasize the role of the Bodhisattvas, those who could achieve enlightenment but chose to be reborn into the heavens in order to help others who pray to them. Buddhists in this school often pray to Bodhisattvas for help along their spiritual journey

8 Vajrayana School Emerged much later than the other schools
Emphasis on rituals such as mantras and visualizations (wall hangings, mandalas, etc. The concentration required to complete these visualizations is an important part of the quest for enlightenment The Vajrayana school moved into Tibet in the year 750, creating a theocracy: a country governed by monks The leader of this school is the Dalai Lama

9 Who is the Dalai Lama? The current Dalai Lama is the 14th Dalai Lama
Tibetan Buddhists believe that when a Dalai Lama dies, the newly released consciousness enters the body of a newly born male child and will be discovered by monks, using a complicated set of procedures The present Dalai Lama was born with the name Lhamo Thondup, on July 6th, 1935, in Takster, Tibet. Lhamo was recognized as the successor to the 13th Dalai Lama and brought to be trained as a novice monk If the Dalai Lama is a Tibetan Monk, why does he live in exile in India? And what do people mean when they say “Free Tibet”?

12 Zen Buddhism Buddhism was introduced into Japan in the mid 6th century, but did not become popular until the 12th/13th century It is said that the founder of this sect was the “legendary Indian monk Bodhidharma” and that he meditated while staring at a wall for so long that his legs fell off True? Unlikely. Represents the emphasis on meditation as the best method for attaining enlightenment Good works and devotion are not completely discounted but just not considered crucial for enlightenment Zen cannot be taught; it must be experienced.
