What is management about? Fall 2015 Hint cards
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT A1 What is management about? Fall 2015 Hint cards

Can robots fully replace people?
How do we organize our work when working with other people? Via communication – the company goal, job goal, time management and schedules (what the employees do and when), remuneration When do we prefer to work alone as sole proprietors? Why? Jobs with less complex workload When specializing in one area or activity → accountants, doctors
3
What is the shape and size of any legal entity where we work … ? Why?
What if we decide not to run a sole proprietorship? One sole owner of the company – he/she makes all decisions => no HR, no employment contracts, faster decision making than when delegating powers to others => one cannot know it all => less educated = effective decisions What is the name of the body of people in which or where we work? Depends on the size of the company → ?
4
Who has what roles? Why? Do you have the staff to handle the job?
If yes, can you show their competencies to deliver satisfactory performance? How? If not, what do you do? How – set the goals, deadline a) hire new employees b) reorganizing the current staff ( depending on the budget) Who has what responsibilities? How do workers know what responsibilities they have? Where is the info from as to when a task is to be done? Manager distributes work (must know what he’s doing)
5
The first load of goods to be shipped
How do you know who is needed and when to handle the shipment via an 18-wheeler truck? What about the human factor? → by calculating the revenue > cost -> efficiency → how do we know? → by communicating with partners and calculate cost of transport (shipment), currency exchange between CZK and EUR ..., petrol How can you make it known to each staff member to be available at a certain time? Whose job is to do this, in fact?
6
Multi-national staff … ?
It appears that one of the shipments shall be made December 31st and January 1st. The key person to handle the paper-work for this shipment and to dispatch the truck is an Orthodox Christian. What do you do about it? What about any key factors or criteria in this regard?
7
Clocking in and out vs. getting the work done
What business functions have you identified so far? Board of directors Department manager Accountant Lawyer How can you ensure that papers for the cargo are ready on time without any mistakes in them? IT communication and booking system Do you have to schedule someone special to process the documents in advance? How can mistakes/errors be avoided?
8
How to organize your work ...
Q1: When do we get the money? A1: We get a 50% prepayment. → how do you make it happen? Q2: What could be done automatically by robots? A2: Website works automatically like a robot (collecting offers). → who must create it? How long does it take? How much does it cost? Q3: Who organizes the work? A3: A manager creates the schedule for employees. → based on what? That is, how does he know what the schedule should look like? Couldn't this be done by the employees themselves? Q4: Based on what contract? A4: Based on contract that been made by sending and receiving companies. → who made it? Do you have anyone who can write contracts in Russian or Kazakh or German?
9
Whom to hire? Version 1 A2: 1 person to organize shipments … 7,500 EUR/year A2: 1 accountant … 7,200 EUR/year A2: 1 sales manager to communicate with the buyers, coordinates the work of the two above … 9,000 EUR/year A2: 1 director who signs contracts, hires new employees … 11,000 EUR/year A2: a lawyer – what for? Are these the job market standards? Aren't these full-time jobs? Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire someone from the outside? How often do you hire new employees? Do you need to waste money paying the director?
10
Whom to hire? Version 2 Top Manager – to generate a statistical report, salary = 1,400 EUR/month → isn't this a very expensive report? What do we need it for? What do we do with it? What information does it contain? Logistic Manager – to calculate shipment costs and print a logistic report and to arrange the delivery, salary = 800 EUR/month → isn't this a very expensive report? What do we need it for? What do we do with it? What information does it contain? What does it mean to arrange delivery? When the product is delievered, what does he do? Is bribing unethical? Why isn't giving presents fair? Why isn't paying “extra money” for “extra service” ethical if everyone knows that this option exist? What if we make the price range officially known to the public? Isn't skipping the waiting list in a kindergarden by bribing the decision maker just like paying a regular price? If a politician wins in elections through bribing his/her own voters, and then he fails to keep his promises, what is likely to happen to him/her later?
