GOD’S BIG STORY

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Genesis 1 v

Ecclesiastes 6 v 2 Ecclesiastes 5 v 10
2 God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil. 10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 6 v 2 Ecclesiastes 5 v 10

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind Romans 12 v 1 - 2

HOW DOES IS FIT WITH THE GOAL OF DISCIPLESHIP?

PARABLE OF THE TALENTS Matthew 25 v 14 – 30
What was the master expecting from the stewards? How did the response of the servants highlight what they thought of their master? How does the master demonstrate his approval/disapproval?

PRINCIPLES OF STEWARDSHIP
“Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given by God. If you devoted every moment of your life exclusively to His service., you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own, already.” CS Lewis Mere Christianity

1. OWNERSHIP “The earth is the LORD’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it” Psalm 24 v 1 “You might say to yourself ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth” Deuteronomy 8 v
12
2. RESPONSIBILITY “Each should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen” 1 Peter 4 v
13
3. ACCOUNTABILITY “For we will all stand before God’s judgement seat. It is written : “As surely as I live” says the Lord, “Every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.” So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” Romans 14 v 10b - 12
14
4. REWARD “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3 v

What challenges are there with living as stewards in this area
What challenges are there with living as stewards in this area? What does God have in mind for us? What does it look like to do this well? What does it look like when it’s done badly? What could we do differently?

HOW CAN WE STEWARD EFFECTIVELY?

“Jesus set himself apart for the goal of our salvation
“Jesus set himself apart for the goal of our salvation. He lost everything, endured everything, to obtain it. Christ’s passion was for you and for his father – not for himself. There is our model. When the extend and depth of Jesus’ passion for you dawns on your heart, it will generate passion for the life he has called you uniquely to live in the world. When you realise what could be done to rescue you, your pride and envy begin to disappear because you don’t need to get your self worth from being richer, cooler, more powerful or more comfortable.
20
Instead of working out of a lazy restlessness, which is born of selfishness, you are working our of a true passion, which is born of selflessness. You are adopted into God’s family, so you already have your affirmation. You are justified in God’s sight, so you have nothing to prove. You have been saved through a dying sacrifice, so you are free to be a living one. You are loved ceaselessly, so you can work tirelessly in response to a quiet inner fullness” Tim Keller – Every Good Endeavour
