3 What is this course about?
United States Government and Politics Comparative Government and Politics This course will prepare you for 2 AP Exams AP US Government and Politics AP Comparative Government and Politics The course will look at the overarching themes of government and politics using country case studies from around the world, as well as the US

4 Overarching Themes – Our Units
Sovereignty, Power, and Governance Citizens, Civil Society, and the State Political Parties and Elections Political Institutions Political and Economic Change

5 The AP Exams – cheaper than a college course!
Date Time Multiple Choice FRQs Why you should take it US Thurs. May 10 Morning 60 4 (1-2 pgs each) If you pass, most schools will waive the required US Gov course EVERYONE has to take US Gov in college, so why retake it next year! Comp Thurs. May 17 55 5 Short Answer 1 Conceptual 2 Country ?s If you pass, this exam will count toward one of your social science GEs (everyone must take 2-3 depending on the school)

6 Are the AP Exams required?
Exam Fee $93 With Fee Waiver $5 If you can only afford one Take US Gov – it will count regardless of major! Technically, I cannot require participation in the exam However, I would strongly encourage you take both since you will be prepared for both! You could possibly go into college with 6 semester units, just from this one course! That’s 2 GEs! Regardless of whether or not you take the exam, there will be review and a final for both comparative and US

7 Absences, Make-Up Work, and Late Work
Excused Absences – you have one day for each day you are absent to make up work Unexcused Absences – Unless I am informed ahead of time, there are no make-ups! Late Work Just like a college course, late work is not accepted – once it is late, it is a zero If there is an emergency or other extenuating circumstance, I must be informed BEFORE the assignment is due!

8 Materials You Will Need
A Computer, Phone, Tablet, or Other Device (If you do not have access, the library and career center should be utilized for assignments – inform me ASAP if this is an issue) Some way to organize your notes – Binder, Spiral Notebook, Computer, etc. – organize how you need, this is a college course and you will have the freedom college students have Writing Tools – Pens, Pencils, Highlighters, etc. (FRQs must be written in PEN) Copy of Syllabus and Reading List at all times

9 Grading Scale Grades will be entered on a typical letter grade scale
However, I may round a grade up that is above a 79, 89, etc. You cannot have any missing assignments to be considered for this

10 Cellphones and Academic Dishonesty
Plagiarism Includes copying and pasting, copying classwork, using another’s ideas as your own (even if you switch the words around) Other Cheating Using a classmates’ notes on a reading quiz, using your phone, computer, or tablet during a test or quiz, talking to a classmate during an exam Academic Dishonesty is a BIG deal – the consequences of cheating or plagiarism are immense and will follow you for the rest of you academic career If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing, the following could happen: Zero on the assignment or test Direct referral to the office You could get your offer of admission revoked from your college If you were in college, you would have to attend a hearing with the Dean and chances would be high that you would be kicked out of school

11 Readings US Government Comparative Government
The Wilson Textbook We do not yet have a class set for our comparative government textbook, but all readings will be available on the class website or in my classroom Aside from textbooks, there will be numerous supplemental readings to be done. I will not print off an article or excerpt for you, you will need to print them off if you wish to annotate them

12 Reading Quizzes Readings are listed on the class website and are unlikely to change throughout the year You will be given a 5 question reading quiz following all sets of readings – done on Socrative You may use your reading notes on the reading quizzes – if they are typed, they must be printed out! You may use your oops on your renaissance card to drop your lowest reading quiz at the end of each semester

13 Controversial Issues We will discuss many controversial issues throughout this year and as such, you must do the following: Respect your classmates’ opinions and beliefs no matter what Positivity Only! Bullying, peer pressure, or snide comments will not be tolerated If you disagree – do it in a civil way – never attack someone’s character Inform me if a topic is making you uncomfortable We can make arrangements for an alternate assignment

Go to the Ayala Website Click on Classrooms  Clark, Taylor (Yes, that’s my first name) On the main page you will find the syllabus and reading list My Webpage Click on the Unit that we are currently on, then the week we are on You will find a list of the readings you will need to complete – most of the comparative readings will need to be accessed through Office 365 OneNote and our Classroom Notebook Readings Due dates and our course calendar will be under each unit page Due dates will also be updated on my classroom homepage Calendar and Due Dates Each week under each unit will have a discussion board available for you to use Use these forums to ask myself or each other questions about the readings or assignments – follow the online forum guidelines Discussion Forums

16 Office 365 1 2 3 Go to the Ayala website  Students  Office 365
Or just google “Office 365 Login” 2 Username – Same as your school computer login (usually tclark or tclark1 followed Password – Capital first initial, lowercase last initial + last 5 digits of ID# (Tc20000) 3 Once logged in look at the different apps that are available – you will need to use these apps to complete assignments or collaborate on group projects (sorry no Google Docs – I can’t access it)
