4 How do we teach phonics in Reception?
The children will be taught sounds through Jolly Phonics including the songs and actions. Initially the children will be taught set 1 of the Read Write Inc speed sounds. In Read Write Inc phonics the individual sounds are called speed sounds because we want the children to read them effortlessly. The lessons are short, fun and active. The children are praised constantly. Examples: m, a, s, d

6 Fred Talk I a-m F-r-e-d As soon as the children know a group of sounds they will be introduced to Fred. Fred speaks in pure sounds to help the children to blend e.g. ch-i-p We will use ‘Fred talk’ throughout the day.

7 Word Time As soon as the children have learnt the first set of sounds we begin ‘word time’ at the end of the phonics session. Green words are made using individual sound cards and we assist the children with blending. The children also use magnetic letters to make these words.

8 Red Words Red words are used to help the children recognise the fact that there are words that are tricky to read because you can not sound them out in the normal way.

9 Speed sounds set 2 and 3 – The long vowels
Once your child knows all Set 1 sounds by sight and sound and uses them to blend to read words, we start teaching Set 2 long vowel sounds. The children will learn the sound and a rhyme e.g. ow, blow the snow. The children will now have one way of spelling the long vowels.

10 Set 3 Speeds Sounds Set 3 looks at alternative ways of spelling the same sound.

11 Key Points and how to help at home
Usually, four sounds will be taught a week RWI handwriting sheets will be given out at the beginning of the week to be completed as homework throughout the week. Please go over the sounds daily. After each set of letters a sound sheet will be sent home. These can be used to play several games.

12 Key Points and how to help at home
Reading books – Initially picture books (pink book band) to share. Green words & Tricky words– To practise at home To read frequently for short periods of time Each book can be read several times.

13 All children will progress at a different rate.

14 Reading feeds the imagination, it expands horizons and offers new and exciting ways of seeing and making sense of our lives and of the world around us. Michael Morpurgo Thank you for coming!
