1 Phonics in Year 1 Revisit and continuation from Reception phonics Daily 30 minute sessions Smaller focused group teaching run by Year 1 staff

2 Phonics for Reading Quick recall of phonic knowledge for improved reading. Helps decode unfamiliar words by breaking words down into sounds. Recognise similar word patterns e.g. ‘and’ in ‘hand’ Develops fluency as key words are taught and remembered. Reading simple to more complex sentences with a mixture of quick recall and sounding out unknown words.

3 Phonics for Writing Segmenting words into smaller sections to write simple words e.g. b-oa-t Segmenting words into smaller sections to be able to write more complex words e.g t-e-d-ee b-air Writing the key words from memory they have been taught in their lessons. Writing simple sentences using phonics and key words so that it is decodable by both child and adult e.g. I like to wright a leter.

4 Progression of Phonics
Teach phonemes e.g. alphabet sounds m,a,s,d,g etc and use these to read and write CVC words e.g c-a-t, l-o-g Teach simple digraphs (two letters, one sound) e.g. ch, sh and read and write words including these e.g. chips, shop Teach trigraphs (three letters, one sound) e.g. igh, ear and read and write words including these e.g. light and fear Teach split digraphs (formally magic e) e.g a-e and i-e and read and write words including these e.g. cape and like Teach alternative pronunciations e.g. ow as in snow and ow as in brown. Teaching vocabulary so children know when to use each rule.

5 Home Support Reading! (at least 3x weekly/signs/posters etc)
Let your children see you reading for pleasure Develop a love of language and a love of words e.g discuss meanings of unfamiliar words with children. Memory games, races Let the children teach you their sounds! Look at the blog for the weekly sounds for your child’s group Write using sounds in informal situations e.g. shopping lists

6 Games & Videos Youtube – Search for Mr Thorne does Phonics (he also has his own website and app range available on the App store & Google Play stores) Phonicsplay.co.uk – Subscription is £12 for the year but free games are accessible for all levels (phases) ictgames.com (free to use and great for Maths as well as Literacy!) teachyourmonstertoread.com (subscription available but flashcard games are free) abcya.com (subscription only for tablet, but ALL accessible for free from a desktop computer/laptop. Also great for Maths/strategy/seasonal games. Youtube- jolly phonics songs videos (alphabet sounds and digraphs).
