Construction Methods Slab- is the process of making pottery using flat
pieces of clay. Drape- is the process of making pottery using flat pieces of clay pressed onto a mold. Slump- is the process of making pottery using flat pieces of clay pressed into a mold.

Construction Methods Pinch- is the process of making pottery by molding a piece of clay in your hands. Coil- is the process of making pottery using ropelike pieces of clay stacked onto each other.

Wheel Thrown- is the process of making pottery using the potter’s wheel.

The quality of clay that allows it to be manipulated and still maintain its shape without cracking or sagging. Leatherhard- Unbendable clay that is still damp enough to carve. Bonedry- Pottery that is almost completely dry but still contains a small amount of water. Greenware- Pottery that is totally dried, but not yet fired. Bisqueware- Pottery that has been fired once but not yet glazed. Glazeware- Pottery that has been fired twice with glaze.

Drying out process Always cover clay with a plastic bag to prevent it from drying out. Damp paper towel helps to keep clay wet! Wet paper towel will make your project collapse. When you are finished with a project unwrap it and allow to dry slowly and evenly to prevent cracking.

Kiln Vocabulary Kiln- The furnace made of bricks in which pottery is fired. (Electric, wood, gas) Element- Coils of nichrome wire that heat the kiln. Thermocouple- A thermometer used for measuring the temperature of a kiln. Kiln Wash- liquid substance used to protect kiln shelves from glaze drippings. Kiln Shelf- An article of kiln furniture that ceramic pieces are placed on for firing. Posts- An article of kiln furniture used to support shelves in the loading process. Stilts- An article of kiln furniture used to prop up glazed pottery to prevent it from sticking to kiln shelves.

Recipe for leadless clear glaze:
Cone 05 Frit grams EPK China Clay 8.0 grams Bentonite grams Water Glaze- Made of ground minerals. When fired to certain temperature minerals fuse into a glassy coating. Matt or Glossy, (depending on their components).

Underglazes Underglaze- Any coloring material used under a glaze. Underglazes are usually bright in color and look dull without a clear gloss glaze applied.
