Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an old site or building for a purpose other than which it was built or designed for. Along with brownfield reclamation, adaptive reuse is seen by many as a key factor in land conservation and the reduction of urban sprawl. WHAT IS ADAPTIVE REUSE?
3
SMITH ELEMENTARY Smith Elementary School was named after Fred E. Smith, who donated the land on which the school was built The main building was originally built in 1918 It has had several additions over the years from 1955 to 1994

CONCEPT STATEMENT For almost 100 years Smith Elementary School has been an institution of learning and a place of growth for children across the community of Kenmore, including myself. While its closing marks the end of an era it also presents a unique opportunity. Through adaptive reuse, Smith Elementary can have a second life as a creative business space and remain a cornerstone building in the community. The central goal of maintaining the beautiful original architectural details blends with the challenge of making this a functional space for businesses to come and flourish in, in the same rooms as hundreds of children have done before. This idea will set apart this building as more than just an ordinary office building and will continue its legacy as a place where people come to learn and grow. Reinvigorating and reworking the original details that already are the base of this building such as the hardwood floors, the arched ceilings and the woodwork, while adding the modern amenities that are needed by the modern day small business will be the central focus of this project. Yet again this building will be more than just a building but a place of opportunity to small businesses.

The main idea when it came to demolition was to maintain as much of the original structure as possible. Fortunately this was possible with the most changes being made to the kitchen, main office and the storage rooms on the first and second floors. THE DEMO

When putting up new walls the changes were made where the demolition occurred. Some made rooms bigger or are from the relocation of a door. A big addition here was the elevator, which now makes all levels of this building accessible. NEW PARTITIONS

This building at the end of this process is meant to have each room rented out. The furniture plan first gives the option of potentially renting furniture for these spaces as well as showing all of the potential layouts that can be achieved in these spaces. No two rooms on these plans are space planned the same. FURNITURE PLAN

FINISH PLAN Yet again there was the focus on preserving this building. That incudes the finishes, namely, the floors and architectural details like the brick, tile and millwork. The finish plan indicates how these different finishes are to be restored or maintained. Along with this there is fresh paint that is to cover the walls from Benjamin Moore’s historic range so it’s possible that these colors could have originally been in this building.

While its closing marks the end of an era it also presents a unique opportunity. Through adaptive reuse Smith Elementary can have a second life as a boutique hotel and remain a cornerstone building in the community. The central goal of maintaining the beautiful original architectural details blends with the challenge of making this a comfortable hotel to stay in for short or extended periods of time to create the real challenge. Reinvigorating and reworking the original details that already are the base of this building such as the hardwood floors, the arched ceilings and the woodwork, while adding the luxuries of home are what will set apart this hotel from any other in the area making it more than just a hotel but a continued pillar in the community.

THE DEMO Any demolition of the original structure was done to make the hotel suites more functional and to aid in accessibility. That means simplifying the office and check-in, combining storage rooms with classrooms and moving some walls to make rooms bigger.

The end purpose of this building is for each room to either house a suite or an amenity. There are various options for people to choose from should they wish to stay here from suite that are more family friendly to ones that are meant for two people for a short stay. There is at least one room here to meet everyone’s needs. FURNITURE PLAN
