Appearance VS Reality Sadie Egan & Renee Daigle

2 Why is Appearance and Reality important?
Appearance and reality are important to this book because every character in the play is deceiving in some sort of way. During the play, the characters only see what appears to be, but as the reader, we see what reality is before the characters.

3 Hamlet: King Claudius:
He comes across as mentally insane to his family and friends because he talks to himself. In reality he can see his father’s ghost and is physically able to speak with him. He appears to be a man after his brother’s death by stepping up and taking the throne, as well as the responsibilities of his brother’s family. In reality, the reader finds out that the King killed his brother, and has been plotting to kill his step-son.

4 Polonius: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern:
As a side man to the king Polonius, appears to be a well-trusted man and a caring father. When Leartes leaves for France, his father gives him his blessing and words of encouragement. Although, once Leartes is gone, Polonius sends Reynaldo to spy on his son because he does not trust him. These two appear to be good life-long friends with Hamlet, but in reality, they help the king spy on Hamlet. They convince Hamlet to reveal information to them which they can deliver to the King.

5 “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”

6 Which characters are true to themselves?
Hamlet: Queen Gertrude: Hamlet felt he was being true to himself and his father by plotting revenge on the King. Hamlet has to deceive others because feels obligated. The Queen only married Claudius in order to keep the throne. She was unaware of his evil doings. She does not deceive others, she’s just an idiot.
