ALIGNING program, course and class OBJECTIVES/outcomes
Health Sciences - ICRDCE Conference 2016- Day-2
2
Learning Outcomes of This Presentation
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Explain what a program, course and class objectives/outcomes are. Develop a program, course and class outcomes at a selected learning level.
3
PROGRAM OUTCOMES, COURSE AND CLASS OBJECTIVES /OUTCOMES
Program, course and class objectives should reflect learning in all domains Cognitive domain (understanding- example- how stroke can affect the body) Affective domain (expressive attitudes- life long responsibility to care for a patient with stroke) Psychomotor domain (physical skills- how to meet the basic needs of a patient with stroke)
4
PROGRAM OUTCOME Program outcome: The essential competencies the learner must possess at the completion of the program. Example of a program outcome : Practices patient centered care Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration Effectively uses current technology and informatics
5
COURSE OUTCOMES Course objectives/outcomes: Selected courses are placed in logical sequence with a selected objectives and learning activities in all learning domains. Example of Course objectives (based on the Program outcomes) Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan and evaluate patient care Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively Utilize clinical technology and informatics to provide effective care to patients.
6
CLASS OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
Class objective/outcomes: Faculty articulate learning objectives for specific lessons that compose a unit, project, or course, or they may determine learning objectives for each day they instruct students.
7
CLASS OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
Example of Class Student Learning Outcomes (Based on the course objectives)- At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will be able to: Prioritize the nursing care for a patient with stroke Differentiate among mechanisms of action, clinical presentation, diagnostic testing and treatment options for patients with stroke.
8
Give An Example of Differences
Remember: Objectives are Teacher or Program focused Outcomes are Student or Learner focused
9
OVERALL VIEW OF PROGRAM, COURSE AND CLASS OBJECTIVES OR OUTCOMES
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE/ OUTCOME: Practices patient centered care COURSE OBJECTIVE/OUTCOME: Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan and evaluate the care CLASS(UNIT) OBJECTIVE/OUTCOME : At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will be able to prioritize the nursing care for a patient with stroke

OVERALL VIEW OF PROGRAM, COURSE AND CLASS OBJECTIVES OR OUTCOMES
ZOOM OUT ( The bigger picture)- PROGRAM OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES. ZOOM IN- COURSE OUTCOMES STILL ZOOM IN- CLASS OUTCOMES
11
PROGRAM OUTCOMES- ALL PUT TOGETHER TO GET THE BIGGER PICTURE
12
COURSE OUTCOME/OBJECTIVES-INDIVIDUAL PARTS TO MAKE THE WHOLE PROGRAM OUTCOME
13
CLASS OBJECTIVES/ OUTCOME – EACH INDIVIDUAL PARTS PUT TOGTHER TO MAKE THE COURSE OBJECTIVES.
14
ACTIVITY STRATEGIES/LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Learning strategies/activities – that can be used to achieve the designed learning outcomes/objectives. Simulation Case study Concept map Debate Problem based learning Role play Here, examples will be used to explain each learning activities. There can be many more learning activities that can be used to achieve the learning outcomes.
15
Bloom’s Cognitive Domains (Old and new version)
16
LEVELED OUTCOMES AND HOW IT IS USED ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
Level I = Knowledge/Comprehension Level II = Comprehension / Application Level III = Application / Analysis Level IV = Analysis / Synthesis & Evaluation (Refer to the MC “Clinical Evaluation Tool” to explain the levels) Here I will elaborate on how MC uses the clinical evaluation tool for the students across the curriculum- plan to give the hand out of the evaluation tool and the rubric.
