A Perfect Portfolio! Lesson # 2
2
Day One: Introduction Today, we will set up our warm up page, review comic-style lettering, and begin creating our portfolio folders! First, I want you to write “A Perfect Portfolio” at the top of the first clean page in your notebook.
3
Warm Up On the bottom half, define: Portfolio Comic Lettering
A Perfect Portfolio On the bottom half, define: Portfolio Comic Lettering
4
Example: Comic Lettering
What do these different types of letters have in common? 2. What are some ways we could recreate these styles?
5
Today’s Activity Fold your portfolio paper in half, like a hamburger! While you work today, I will walk around and staple the sides of your folder. With your pencil, lightly draw out the letters of your name. (I like to start with the middle letter and work outward!) Now, make outlines around your stick letters. Each letter should be overlapped by the letter to the left of it.
6
Teacher Example!
7
Today’s Instruction 5. Use a black Sharpie to trace over your outlines. Try to loosen up and draw with your whole arm for a more fluid look. 6. Add shadows! I recommend adding an edge to the left and bottoms of letters. 7. Erase your pencil lines.
8
Wrap Up Papers: Place portfolios on the metal racks.
Trash: Ask if anyone has trash. Take the trash can around, if needed. Supplies: Return rulers to the counter. Count Sharpies and return them to me.
9
Day 2: Warm Up In the upper left column of your notes, write the name “Will Eisner ( ).” Write the following: He helped develop the look of modern comics. He often turned comic lettering into part of the background. Today, the best comic creators are given Eisner Awards!
10
How can we gain inspiration from Eisner’s style?
13
Today’s Assignment Today, we will continue adding color and customization to our comic lettering. What can you do to make your name unique and colorful? Add an “Aura.” Draw characters or abstract designs around your letters. Create shadows of your letters. The possibilities are endless!

15
Day 3: Warm Up On the bottom half of your notes, underneath your practice letters, write: 3. Silhouette: cast or show (someone or something) as a dark shape and outline against a lighter background. 2. There are lots of ways to create silhouettes. Have you made one before?
16
Today’s Activities... Today, we are going to continue customizing our portfolios. You may use the supplies on the counters to add color and graphics to your name. On the other side, you may have me trace the outline of your profile. You may add other elements to this silhouette. For example, you can add thought bubbles with your favorite quotes, or patterns and colors. Think of the possibilities!

Today’s Assignment Today, we will continue adding color and customization to our portfolios. Keep in mind the graphic design examples we have seen in class. Our goal is for most of the class to finish working today. Tomorrow will be a wrap up day. You may listen to music on the Chromebooks (with headphones). Those who need extra time will work on portfolios, and those who are finished will have other activities from which to choose.
