1 Mrs. C's Bell Ringer Grab the Cornell Notes (C-Notes) page at the door
Go directly to your assigned seat Place your materials (agenda, interactive notebook, vocabulary folder, Unibinder) on the right hand corner Write the day’s agenda into your agenda When the bell rings you will be given a quiz and 5 minutes to complete it.

8 Topic: Measurement and the Metric System
Essential Question: How do we measure in a science classroom?

9 What is measuring? This year we will be measuring many things but will use the same four ways to measure: Mass Length Volume Temperature

10 What is mass? Mass is a measure of quantity. Mass is measured in grams
How much matter an object contains. Mass is measured in grams Grams can be abbreviated by a g Mass is measure by using a triple beam balance. Triple Beam Balance

11 1- Remove everything from the pan.
EMPTY

12 2- Move all the riders to zero You’re pointer should also be at zero

13 3- Place object on the pan

14 4- Starting with the largest rider, move it over until the pointer falls. Then move it back….
BIG ONE FIRST

15 5- Continue moving all the riders until the pointer points at zero.
Medium one next Small one last

16 What is length? Length is a measure of distance.
How long or how wide something is, or how far it is between two points. Length is measure in meters or m. Length is measure with a metric ruler. Metric Ruler

17 What is volume? Volume is the measure of how much space a solid object takes up or how much liquid a container can hold. Volume is measured in Liters or L. Volume is measured with a graduated cylinder. Graduated Cylinders

18 What is a Graduated Cylinder?
Read the original volume Place the object into the graduated cylinder Read the new volume Subtract the new volume from the original volume

19 Things to remember Meniscus

20 Ummm…… 54 mL???? WRONG!

21 Hey! You need to get down at eye level!
CORRECT! Oh yeah!... 38 mL! Hey! You need to get down at eye level!

22 Graduated Cylinder and Water Displacement Method
15 mL – 10 mL = 5 mL = 5 mL

23 What is temperature? Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness. Temperature is measure in Celsius or C°. Temperature is measured with a thermometer. Thermometer

25 Why Do We Use the Metric System?
Almost all other countries are using the metric system Other countries’ companies are refusing to buy products from the U.S. if not labeled in metric units Scientists need a universal way to communicate data (SI Units)

26 How do we use the metric system?
kilo- (k_) 1,000 **Fill out your ladder chart using this slide** hecto- (h_) 100 To convert to a smaller unit, move decimal point to the right or multiply. deka- (dk_) 10 *UNIT* m=meter L=liter G=gram *UNIT* ( ___ ) deci- (d_) 0.1 centi- To convert to a larger unit, move decimal point to the left or divide. (c_) 0.01 To Remember: King Henry Drank Up Dark Chocolate Milk milli- (m_) 0.001

27 Summary When writing Cornell Notes it is always important to reflect on what you discovered. You will ALWAYS write 4-5 sentences summarizing your notes. Hint: If you answer the questions you were given in the form of a sentences and put them together, you will have a summary!

28 Fold the top of the page back a little bit.
Put a small bit of glue on the BACK of the page. Place the glue in your notebook where the red line would be. Fold notes in half so it fits into notebook. 1 2 4 3

29 Next… Metric ladder goes on page 2
Should look like this (Before you fold your notes)

30 Word Maps Words Apparatus Length Mass Temperature Volume Metric System
