Brief Review of Tenses/Progressives
Present Tense- “ I look at my grades on-line.” Past Tense- “I looked at my grades on-line.” Future Future- “ I will look at my grades on-line.” Progressives are verbs that- -end in ING, plus, they include a helping verb. -IS readING, WAS smilING, AM laughING

PRINCIPLE PARTS 1.) Verbs have 4 different and basic forms called, “principle parts”. 1.) Present 2.) Present Participle TALK is/am TALKING 3.) Past 4.) Past Participle TALKED has/have TALKED

EXAMPLES “He walks toward us in a hurry.” (Present)
“Mrs. Gott IS walkING toward us.” (Present Participle) “They walkED to the park.” (Past) “We HAVE walkED three miles in search for our friends.” (Past Participle)

REGULAR VERBS 1.) The past and the past participle of a regular verb are formed by: ---- Adding –ED or –D to the present form. 1.) chirp (is/am) chirping chirped (have/has) chirped 2.) move (is/am) moving moved (have/has) moved 3.) charge (is/am) charging charged (have/has) charged PRESENT PRESENT PARTICIPLE PAST PAST PARTICPLE

IRREGULAR VERBS 1.) The past and Past Participle forms DO NOT follow the –ED or –D pattern. 2.) Look on pages to see the irregular forms. a.) make present- Every season, Bears fans (have created) orange and blue posters. b.) make present participle- Chicago (cheer) for the Sox and the Cubs. c.) make past- On Halloween, children (dress up). d.) make past participle- I (dress up) like a witch on Halloween.

1.) AS MENTIONED DURING OUR “HELPING VERB” NOTES, A PRINCIPLE PART VERB (Main Verb) IS COMBINED WITH A HELPING VERB, WHICH CREATES A VERB PHRASE. 2.) The Formula is as follows: HELPING VERB ⁺ PRINCIPLE VERB ⁼ A Verb Phrase. 3.) Helping Verbs are added BEFORE another verb to make a verb phrase.

The forms of the verbs, be, do, and have can be used as either Main Verbs or Helping Verbs! 1.) IS that clear?? (Main Verb) 2.) Who DID that?? (Main Verb) 3.) Joe IS speaking! (Helping/Main Verb) 4.) We DID remember! (Helping/Main Verb)
