What Science Means to Us

Engineering Challenge
As a group, you will build any object you would like, but must abide by the following rules: Must use all the parts May only use parts provided in cup You may not trade parts with another team Your object can be from the past, present, or something that hasn’t been invented yet. Your object must be something. You can’t just screw all the parts together and call it good.
10
Student’s Advice for working together
"To work as one machine" Listen to each other's ideas and work together as a team" "you don't have to restart... you can change it" Keep it simple "Think outside the box" "You need to get the box with the most screws and bolts" "Have a plan before you start" "Make a plan, and know how each member can help" "Hope you get good pieces and good luck" "Don't make a plan before you have your pieces" "experiment and try new things"

E&S Science Topics Catastrophic events Storms Earthquakes Volcanoes
Earth in Space Sun-Earth-Moon system Solar system/Earth’s History Engineering practices and Human Impact are woven into the major units. Students may check out a hard copy of textbook or use online version. Notebooks kept in class Piloting 3 Curriculums: PBIS Pearson Discovery Ed

Skyward Zeros – Don’t Panic!
Students may turn in anything from the trimester up to the last day of the trimester. The only reason that a student should have a 0 in the gradebook by the end of the trimester is if he/she didn’t turn the work in… ever. If students turn in work late, they will get some credit. You might see a 0 if: Student was absent (grade will be changed when he/she turns it in) No name (student should check “no name” folder, and put name on it. After it is turned in, I will change the grade) Student didn’t turn it in (grade will change after he/she turns it in late) If an assignment is marked ‘0MS’ and your child insists s/he turned it in, ask: ‘Was your name on it? Check the ‘No Name’ folder for your assignment.’ – No name on an assignment is considered late

Plickers As a parent, what is most important to you for your child's education? Limiting/reducing homework Multiple ways to show mastery of standards Hands on activities for my child Giving students a personal connection to the curriculum

SIGN UP FOR REMIND HOMEWORK REMINDERS VIA TEXT/EMAIL!
Science is lab-based. Investigations are done in class. Most homework is practice or reflection for students and informal assessment for me. Non-fiction, scientific reading following lab investigations. Questions may be on Student Access Minimum 3 nights to complete to allow for any tech issues Reflection questions & Summary of Learning following lab investigations. Unfinished class work - handouts, reflection questions, lab write-ups Students who use their time wisely in-class will have little or none most nights. Due dates will be posted on the classroom website; however, Homework Board/planners are most current!
16
Why Standards Based Allows students to know what they know and what they do not know. The focus in on learning and mastery. Scenario 10 Question test – Student A and Student B both miss 3 questions: STUDENT A: Missed questions 2, 5, 9. Score given of 70%. STUDENT B: Standard 1 Water Cycle: 3/3 (met standard, fully understands) Standard 2 Climate: 1/3 (did not meet standard, understands a little) Standard 3 Weather: 3/4 (met standard, mostly understands) Student B knows exactly which concept(s) he/she still need to learn and improve upon.

Occurs each Wednesday, in school, during class
W.I.N. (what I need) Wednesdays Occurs each Wednesday, in school, during class Gives students the opportunity to: Complete any missing work from the previous week (will earn 75% credit) Missing work is accepted for ½ credit until the end of each Trimester. Make-up labs and other work from absences Re-take assessments for standards not met, yet Ask for help/clarification on lessons/labs from the previous week Study for upcoming assessments Organize science notebook Students who do not need to do any of the above have the opportunity during this time to: Engage in further engineering challenges and projects Design and conduct labs based off of their questions Participate in extension activities/research
18
Grades Scores 4- shows full understanding of concepts- A
Scale Assessments * 50% Notebooks 25% Labs 20% Homework 5% Scores 4- shows full understanding of concepts- A 3.4- mostly shows understanding of concepts- B 3- shows some understanding of concepts- C 2.5- shows a little understanding of concepts- D 2- has not yet shown understanding of concepts- F 0 - No effort shown *Students may re-test every WIN Wednesday until the end of the Trimester to master the standard(s) in which they did not meet, and/or to show full understanding (4)

Lab Make-Up It may not always be possible to make up a lab. In this situation, a student may make up the points by completing one of the Lab Make-Up options. Please contact me for options Students will need to receive permission from me for the option they choose. Alternately, I may assign a specific option to complete.
