Water, iron, coal, gold, silver, and forest.
There was a lot in the U.S.
Factories/Machines would run off them.
Ex:
STEAM ENGINE
Factory owners would be able to buy natural resources at a lower price.

4. Industrialization Immigrants EFFECTS Came from:
China
Poland
Greeks
And other places..
Worked for cheap labor.
Worked in factories, buildings, and railroads.
The amount off population was dramatically increasing and led to the CHINEESE EXICUSION ACT .

*There articles outraged the people and made them want CHANGE/REFORMS.

People tried to use biblical ideas and Christian values to make change.
This movement started the Salvation Army, and the YMCA.
This movement provided housing, education, food, and jobs for the poor.

Women wanted the right to vote.
All men had the right to vote under the 15th amendment but women couldn’t
The NAWSA was created, and was organized by women and supporters.
The suffrage was successful.
Women got the right to vote with the 19th amendment.

Women received the right to vote.
Women began to see as equal as men.

This movement advocated for moderation or elimination of alcohol.
These people saw alcohol as one of the main issues such as:
Poverty, abuse, and sickness
This movement was successful a few years later when the U.S.A made alcohol illegal.
Led to prohibition.
The 18th amendment was passed January 16,1919.
This made transportation and manufacturing of alcohol illegal.
Created a black market for alcohol.
Bootleggers made illegal alcohol and shipped it.

kids always worked at the farms but with there parents.
Industrialization led to kids working in factories.

John Spargo wrote a book, “The Bitter Cry of the Children”.
He exposed how badly children were traded.
President Taft created the Children's Bureau to investigate child abuse.
Child labor began to decline.
Schools opened to provide free education
Kids needed a place to go while parents worked.
Business owners could get fined if they allowed child labor.

Medication was made with illegal drugs.
Muckraker Uptian Sinclair wrote, ”The Jungle”
He had gone under cover in a meat packing Co.
No washing of hands, lost body parts in meat, rats, rotten food.
His findings out raged the people.
President Roosevelt and congress passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.
This required inspections of meat factories and meat being sold.
Meat inspections for quality.
Only good meat was sold to the public.
Drug companies had to prove there products were safe for humans.
Safe drugs.
Foods and medication were tested for illegal substances.
Pesticides and dangerous ingredients. (ammonia)

Because of free enterprise corporations were able to create monopolies.
these monopolies used any means possible to control all the businesses.
Progressives pushed to have laws created to stop this.
The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was created to make creating monopolies illegal.
No one paid attention.
President Roosevelt asked congress to create the Bureau of Corporations.
This organization investigated the corporations for illegal behavior
Monopolies were broken up.
The government was very involved in watching the corperations.

18. Progressivism Government Corruption
Progressive wanted the government “cleaned up”.
They called for senators to be chosen by the people not OTHER represenitives.
They saw this as a form of corruption
The 17th amendment was passed giving the people the right to vote for senators.
States would hold direct elections were the people vote.

19. Progressivism 16th Amendment EFFECTS
The government wanted progress too.
Industrialization increased peoples wages, so the government wanted some of that money.
The 16th amendment passed to tax the income of the people.
Everyone who earns an income in the U.S has to pay income tax.
The federal and state governments use the money to provide services:
Welfare
Disability
Unemployment
Social Sercurity
