13 What is responsible food consumption?

14 Responsible Food Consumption means making conscious choices about the foods that we eat by considering the environmental, political, social, cultural and economic aspects of our decisions, that are in accordance with basic and real needs for all, while being low- impact, beneficial and life enhancing for the planet and improving the quality of life for an individual consumer and for society as a whole. (We Eat Responsibly Definition Working Group)

15 What do I eat? Where is my food coming from? How was my food produced? How much food do I consume? How much food do I waste? What is the global impact of my food?

16 How our food changes the world?

17 Oversconsumption

18

19 Overconsumption Can we decrease our consumption of unhealthy food which through their production damage the quality of life for people on the other side of the world? And choose food for ourselves which is tasty & healthy and doesn’t harm the world’s resources?

20 Meat & dairy products

21 Our diets countain more and more fat, meat and sugar
And less and less cereals, potatoes and pulses

22 Meat & dairy products Facts: The world eats more meat than ever before
The biggest consumers are industrialized countries In 50 years the world’s poultry production has increased by 10x

23

24

25 +

26 Meat & milk productions
Once a week or more could we replace meat with grains, legumes & vegetables? And choose meat which doesn’t come from intensive farming?

27 Loss of varieties

28

29

30 Do we value variety & encourage farmers to continue to grow?
Loss of varieties Can we sustain the richness of our system of resources by discovering forgotten types of fruits & vegetables? Do we value variety & encourage farmers to continue to grow?

31 Increased spatio-temporal gaps between production and consumption

32

33 Increased gaps Impacts:
Long journeys to the market are a means of CO2 emissions from air & road travel, contributing towards climate change Majority of products are taken before they mature & sprayed with chemicals to endure the trip.

34 Increased gaps Do we know the actual seasons of fruit & vegetable types? Do we consider food miles? Do we consider if our food is produced with a minimal impact on people & natural resources?

35 Increased consumption of processed food

36

37

38 Processed food Palm oil is the most used vegetable oil in Europe
in 2000, most traded vegetable oil in the world used in 50% of processed foods, cosmetics, detergents, animal feed and fuel Only 15% of palm oil is certified

39 Palm oil Impacts: Land grabs from locals
Deforestation destroys the natural habitat of many species of plants & animals

40 Palm oil Do we consciously look for products that don’t contain palm oil? Or use the ones with highest level of certification? If we see that our favorite products use palm oil, we can write to their producers to urge them to use palm oil with the highest standard of certification.

41 Food wastage

42 Food waste Facts One third of the world’s food is wasted.
In developing countries: 6–11 kg a person Industrialized countries: 95–115 kg

43 Do we notice if we waste food?
Food wastage Do we notice if we waste food? What strategies do we put in place to diminish food waste? Do we work with leftovers?

44 We should try to: Eat less but better Eat local, seasonal and organic if possible Replace meat by plant-based foods more often Choose food produced in respect of people and the planet (water, soil, ecosystems and climate) Look for more diversity in your food Watch out for palm oil Stop food wastage

56 5/6 I intend to keep buying Nutella even though there is palm oil in it, because I love it so much.

57 6/6 It is better to buy imported milk (ex. from Italy) rather than local milk coming from intensive farming.

58 2/3 If meat has been produced and put on the shelves of my supermarket there is no reason not to buy it and to try and reduce my meat consumption. If the meat has been produced and put on the shelves of my supermarket there is no reason not to buy it and to try reduce my meat consumption.
