Brothers—meet 20 years later
review Esau – enough = plenty Jacob – enough = everything What is the difference? What do each have? What does one have the other doesn’t?
11
review Brothers lessons Why the difference? Lessons? We choose
Our character Our relationship to God To change How much to change Esau changed—he did not seek to kill Jacob, but did he change enough? What was his relationship to God? Jacob changed—no deceit in working for Laban; served God, blessed by God Jacob made mistake, changed to serve God Esau made mistakes, got better (forgiving Jacob), but did not serve God Stopping being bad is the right thing to do, but don’t stop short—must replace bad with serving God; Esau stopped short

Move to Bethel God directed Jacob told his house
Put away the foreign gods Purify yourselves Change your clothes Built an altar at Bethel Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse died there Change your clothes—they did not bathe and change clothes everyday like we do. Think of drawing the water for bath and for washing clothes. ‘Change your clothes’ was a sign of freshness, of cleansing. From –Wiersbe, Warren W. ( ). Be Strong (Joshua): Putting God's Power to Work in Your Life (The BE Series Commentary) (p. 61). David C. Cook. Kindle Edition. If the experience of Israel at Mount Sinai was the pattern (Ex. 19:9–15), “sanctify yourselves” meant that everybody bathed and changed their clothes and that the married couples devoted themselves wholly to the Lord (1 Cor. 7:1–6). In the Near East, however, water was a luxury that wasn’t used too often for personal hygiene. In our modern world we’re accustomed to comfortable bathing facilities, but these were unknown to most of the people in Bible times. In the Bible the imagery of washing one’s body and changing clothes symbolized making a new beginning with the Lord. Since sin is pictured as defilement (Ps. 51:2, 7), God has to cleanse us before we can truly follow Him. When Jacob made a new beginning with the Lord and returned to Bethel, he and his family washed themselves and changed their garments (Gen. 35:1–3). After King David confessed his sin, he bathed, changed clothes, and worshipped the Lord (2 Sam. 12:20). The imagery is carried over into the New Testament in 2 Corinthians 6:14—7:1; Ephesians 4:26–27; and Colossians 3:8–14.
