Before Anyone Lived Here
For thousands of years, the land was covered with sheets of ice up to four kilometres thick. When the climate changed and the ice melted, a huge lake formed. We call it Lake Agassiz. The area around Winnipeg was 200 m below water Evidence of this lake exists today in ridges and ancient shore lines; paths along which early inhabitants travelled. The rich, fertile soil of the area was deposited at the bottom of Lake Agassiz.
