Comparing AC-DC and Transformer Rectifier Welders
Standard 6:3 Ag Mech I Comparing AC-DC and Transformer Rectifier Welders
2
AC Welders AC welders rated at 180 and 225 amperes are popular for farm use They cost around $375 and are adequate for most basic welding. They utilize 220 volts of current and don’t draw excessive current so electricity bills not too high
3
DC Welders Some DC welders are driven by electric motors
Such welders must be located near a suitable electrical outlet Other welders are driven by gasoline or diesel engines These units may be transported to the job by truck or trailer. These machines are mobile and offer the operator the freedom to work wherever needed
4
Transformer rectifier welders
Welding rectifier is one step ahead of welding transformer, where the output of welding transformer is converted to direct current through diodes or thyristors. This is efficient method of converting AC to DC with versatile control. Direct current welding gives better control on arc stability, arc length and easy arc strike. It can yield better control on welding current through electronics.
