The student will describe the impacts of advances in entertainment technology on entertainment marketing. The students will explain how marketing entertainment is associated with selling related products. The student will describe the history and evolution of entertainment. The student will explain the importance of customer feedback for the entertainment industry. The student will explain the growing popularity of reality television shows.

What is Entertainment? Whatever people are willing to spend their money and spare time viewing rather than participating in. Entertainment involves the personal choices of consumers. 6 Evolution of Entertainment and Entertainment Marketing
Beginning of Twentieth Century (1900’s) Audiences needed to travel to the entertainment source Audience feedback was instantaneous and live BUT….lack of technology distanced entertainers from their audiences Many reality shows allow views to text their vote to influence the results. Early entertainment required individuals to travel to the location of the entertainment. The audience feedback at early events was unpredictable since it was spontaneous. 7 Radio and Television – Big Eye in Every Room
Early days of radio, television and marketing Radio and television changed the marketing of entertainment in a profound way. Ralphie - A Christmas Story Television had a huge impact on the world of entertainment. Color television was the rage in the 1960s. Flat screen televisions the size of movie screens are now sold for reasonable prices. Choose a Decade: 1950’s 1960’s 1970’s 1980’s 1990’s 2000’s 2010’s Complete the Worksheet

11 1960’s Trend: Family based and western centered
Why: Family morals. Way families stayed together and bonded

12 1970’s Trend: American sitcoms and family based comedies. All in the family and Three’s company Why?

13 1980’s Trend: most shows star families (usually larger families) and are comedies. Ex: The Cosby Show, Dallas, Full House, Dukes of Hazard. There are also a lot of late night shows. Why? : the families were bigger back then and it was important to have big families also people wanted to keep in touch with the new celebrities.

14 1990’s Theme: Comedies/ animated cartoons. Ex: Friends, Seinfeld, Family Guy, The Simpsons Why? Relatable to many types of people. Technology (animation) was improving.

15 2010’s Theme: “Interactive” shows such as Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, Why? Mobile and integrated technology continues to improve.

Advancements in Technology Internet Cable Television Satellite Television Facilitated Distribution of Entertainment to the Masses Technology has impacted many changes in entertainment. 18 The beginning of a big shift…..Disney
Disneyland (1955) / Disney World (1971) represented a new approach to the marketing mix of entertainment. Connected two previously separate entertainment industries. Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California in 1955 and Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida in Disney parks are very popular for family entertainment.
