HISTORY OF SYDNEY Aboriginals inhabited Sydney region for 50,000 years
Sydney region known by Aboriginals as Warrane Captain James Cook first chartered East Coast in 1770 New South Wales claimed by Captain Cook on April 29th 1770

FIRST FLEET Thomas Townsend Baron Sydney set sail for Botany Bay on May 13th 1787 Captain Arthur Phillip named the cove where they landed Sydney Cove The settlement began as a penal colony In 1790 there were 40 convicts and about 730 people in total in the settlement

Free Settlers 1793 saw the first free settlers
Governor Lachian Macquarie arrived in and sorted out problems arising from Rum manufacture. Rum was used as currency as it was easily made from the sugar cane that was grown locally

Free Sydney Transport of convicts was abolished in 1840
In 1842 Sydney was declared a city Rapid growth and development after the gold rush of 1850 Resulting in many American and Chinese immigrants 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia formed
