Switching of Electrical Equipment

2. Objectives
This training outlines the safe work practices required when interacting with electrical equipment in a normal, closed cover scenario.
Examples include:
Closed doors (e.g. hinged doors on disconnect/safety switch closed and latched)
Secured covers (e.g. all screws present & secured on a panelboard cover)
No exposure to energized parts
No evidence of an impeding failure (overheating, short circuit, etc.)
Typical activities include:
Switching a circuit breaker
Switching a motor control center (mcc)
Switching a disconnect/safety switch
Switching of the main disconnect (not simple on/off controls) switch on Class 2 or Class 3 equipment (contact system owner if unsure of equipment classification)
[does not apply to plugging and unplugging of cord-and-plug equipment or to equipment of 120 volts and below]
This training applies ONLY to Electrical Equipment in a Closed Cover Scenario

3. Minimum PPE to Execute Switching Tasks
Safety glasses
Leather gloves
Long sleeve shirt (non-melting or untreated natural fiber)
Long pants (non-melting or untreated natural fiber)

4. One Hand Switching Rules
Be trained and authorized to operate the equipment
Wear the proper PPE
Keep unqualified persons at a safe distance from the switching activity
Properly interrupt the load current
Power down equipment so the current draw is as close to zero as possible
Stand to the side of the enclosure
Do Not reach across the door
Do Not face the equipment

5. Stop Work
IF at anytime a door or a cover needs to be removed from a piece of electrical equipment
and
it is not in an “electrically safe work condition”
(de-energized and properly locked, tagged, and tried (LTT)),
THEN
STOP
WORK!
This training module is only for closed cover (no exposure to any energized parts) work.
Further electrical training is required for working near or on exposed energized parts.

6. Operation of External Meters
This training allows for the operation of Voltage Verification Units (VVU) and other panel mounted diagnostics
When no barriers are breached
When the worker is not exposed to energized parts

7. Things to Remember Electrical hazards are Real !
Acquire the necessary skills for the area in which you are working
Apply all electrical training skills you’ve been taught
Electrical safety is a Lab wide effort
Everyone has a responsibility to report any unsafe electrical acts/concerns to his/her supervisor or to the Electrical Safety Engineer
