The 3 Protestant Catechisms: Luther’s, Westminster, and Heidelberg The Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostle's Creed. Questions and Answers
15
Continuity vs. Discontinuity: Do the Ten Commandments still apply in the New Testament (and thus today)?
16
1st – You shall have no other gods before Me …
Exodus 20:2-3 & Deuteronomy 5:6-7 (NIV84) #1 20:2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. Name & History = The LORD & Out of Egypt/Slavery Other gods = pagan gods Trinitarianism doesn't create problems, it solves problems (Bill McKeever). 16
17
2nd – You shall not make for yourself an idol …
Exodus 20:4-6 & Deuteronomy 5:8-10 (NIV84) #2 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, 20:6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. 17
18
2nd – You shall not make for yourself an idol …
Exodus 20:4-6 & Deuteronomy 5:8-10 (NIV84) Martin Luther took second commandment as restatements of the first Don’t worship false Gods, and don’t worship the real God the wrong way (John MacArthur). Does the command to not make idols still apply after Jesus came? 18
19
3rd – You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God …
Exodus 20:7 & Deuteronomy 5:11 (NIV84) #3 20:7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name. Idolatry misrepresents God visually, taking God’s name in vain misrepresents God verbally (Don Carson). Oaths/Swearing falsely = Calling on God as your witness when you are lying. 19
20
3rd – You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God …
Exodus 20:7 & Deuteronomy 5:11 (NIV84) Blasphemy/Profanity = The charge that Jesus was executed for (Mark 14:64) Calling on God/Being called by God’s name = the reasons God gave His name to Israel. 20
21
4th – Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…
Exodus 20:8-11 & Deuteronomy 5:12-15 (NIV84) #4 20:8 “Remember [Observe] the Sabbath day by keeping it holy [as the LORD your God has commanded you]. 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 20:10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, [nor your ox, your donkey] nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates [so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do.] 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. [Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.] 21
22
4th – Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…
Exodus 20:8-11 & Deuteronomy 5:12-15 (NIV84) Sabbath = Stop/Rest Taking the day off should have been the easiest commandment of all to keep Sabbath is tied to: past creation, present redemption, future heaven (Hebrews 4) 22
23
4th – Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…
Exodus 20:8-11 & Deuteronomy 5:12-15 (NIV84) There is more debate about if this commandment still applies than any other. Full Disclosure: Many of my heroes are 9 commandments guys. 23

4th – Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…
Exodus 20:8-11 & Deuteronomy 5:12-15 (NIV84) How should we keep the Sabbath? Sabbath Keeping as a Pledge of Allegiance 24
