1 South Dakota THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS South Dakota in FY 2016 $11.8 Million: NSF funds awarded 11: NSF-funded institutions 46: NSF grants awarded 2: NSF research centers/facilities "South Dakota has recognized that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics research, an educated and skilled workforce, and an entrepreneurial business environment are the foundation of the state’s competitiveness in a global economy." - James A. Rice, Director of the South Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN SOUTH DAKOTA Researchers at South Dakota State University used NSF funding to develop a novel material that can generate hydrogen, a potential fuel source, in the presence of water and sunlight at room temperature. NSF-sponsored researchers at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology developed a technique that uses bacteria and a biologically based sealant to repair cracks in concrete without the use of hazardous chemicals and with no discoloration. A team of NSF-supported researchers at the Center for Security Printing & Anti-Counterfeiting Technology have developed wireless QR code antennas that are hard to detect and replicate to add additional security and counterfeiting protection to sensitive materials. South Dakota Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. South Dakota received $5 million in NSF educational funding in FY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN SOUTH DAKOTA The South Dakota “Women in Science” Program organizes conferences to introduce young women grades 7-12 to careers in science, with over 1,200 attendees in spring 2008. The South Dakota Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduates Program used submarines to teach high school students engineering concepts during a month-long summer camp. The Oglala Lakota College Math Camp engages students of all ages with advanced math concepts, and combines Lakota language and crafts with math topics such as fractals and calculus to better serve the Pine Ridge Reservation’s Native American students. The Sisseton Wahpeton College, in partnership with the NSF Tribal Colleges and Universities Program, developed an innovation center with multimedia programs and interactive educational software, with all STEM courses now being offered online or as a hybrid course. Courtesy: "It is critical that South Dakotans use the educational programs in place to secure the knowledge and skills needed to meet the work force needs of the biotechnology industry. These are quality, high paying career opportunities here in S.D.” - Steve Salz, president of South Dakota Biotechnology Association "Through undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, SDSU faculty develop the talented, highly educated leaders of tomorrow and support a more prosperous future through research and outreach.” - David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., President, South Dakota State University Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
