Facebook is a social networking website which was founded in 2004 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and two of his roommates Facebook was originally developed for Harvard students, then expanded to other colleges, high schools, workplaces and soon after it began allowing everyone to sign up Competitors : Twitter, Google, Snapchat Facebook Features News Feed: News feed displays the recent activities of users’ friends reorganized and summarized on a daily basis. It uses an algorithm called EdgeRank that selects a small subset of items to place in a user’s News feed using signals based on user behavior throughout the site. Timeline: It organized the user’s posts, content and activities chronologically over the span of a lifetime. Privacy Concerns: Users could limit the visibility of their status updates and personal photographs to individual people or specific groups

3 Facebook Ads: Display Ads – Advertisers target campaigns on the basis of gender, age, geographic location, marital status, languages spoken, places of education, workplaces and interests as stated on a user’s Facebook profile. These ads involved advertising per click and per thousand ad impressions and generated low levels of engagement with the user. Social Ads – This form of advertising leveraged users’ social relationships. This allowed companies that had a Facebook page to target friends of fans of that page. Sponsored stories and Ads for Applications – Turned user interactions into advertisements Facebook Pages – Corporate Pages – Businesses can create free custom Facebook pages and attract users to “like” them. Users will then see status updates, pictures and videos posted by the firm on their page. Promoted Posts - Brand page owners pay to push the content to a broader audience. Mobile – Mobile ads were designed to appear naturally within a user’s newsfeed. Three types of units: Mobile sponsored stories, Mobile page post ads, mobile app installed ads

Businesses can segregate ads and promotions for existing and new prospects. Facebook partnered with online and offline data companies to allow businesses to upload customer contact lists from third parties. Facebook Platform: Enabled third party developers to develop applications on top of Facebook Ability to post to user’s profile directly after permission from user New Industries such as social gaming were built entirely on Facebook platform which built greater user engagement and growth in the site’s traffic Facebook credits, a virtual currency, was introduced that could be exchanged for virtual goods in applications across Facebook but was scrapped later Facebook became mobile games publisher and provided visibility to small and medium sized games developers
