9 Germany was a NEW country formed in 1871
Its EMPEROR/KING was called the KAISER He wanted to make Germany the most powerful country in the world He was AUTOCRATIC – Meaning he would not let anyone else rule in Germany His leadership will lead to WORLD WAR 1

11 In 1918 Germany faced a number of huge problems:
After 4 years, Germany was losing a terrible World war (WW1) against most of the world (including the British Empire, France & Italy.) By 1917 the USA had joined the allies Over 2.5 Million German soldiers were killed & 4 million wounded. Many Germans were tired of war & wanted peace RIP

12 The British Navy BLOCKADED Germany with their ships, stopping food & material reaching Germany.
This caused Fuel shortages, power cuts and near famine conditions. People survived on Turnips

13 German sailors at KIEL refused an order to fight the British Navy.
Word got out about peace negotiations. Some German soldiers and sailors were beginning to MUTINY (Refusing to fight) German sailors at KIEL refused an order to fight the British Navy. DOWN WITH THE KAISER! NO MORE WAR! PEACE NOW!

14 The deadly Spanish flu began to kill thousands of people in Germany in 191. Soldiers and civilians were affected and up to 400,000 would die!

15 The Kaiser had TWO powerful generals – LUDENDORFF and HINDENBERG.
They knew how weak Germany was and they feared INVASION or REVOLUTION at home.

16 Why? To stop this from happening they encouraged TWO things:
The Kaiser was forced to ABDICATE (Give up his throne) A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT led by the Social Democrat SPD were allowed to take over Germany. Why?

17 The Generals HATED DEMOCRACY. They made Germany democratic because:
They knew the Democrats would be forced to surrender – This would be very UNPOPULAR and would take the blame from the Generals. They hoped the Allies would give Germany better peace terms if it was Democratic (especially the USA)

18 On 11th November 1918 Germany surrendered.
