How Does Error Survive In The Face of Truth?

Why do so many choose error over truth?
2 Tim 3.1-9

2 Timothy 3.1-9 1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

2 Timothy 3.1-9 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

Why Do So Many Resist the Truth?
Error: Appeals to the carnal mind – Rom 8.7; 1 Co Appeals to the carnal mind . . . Romans 8:7 (NKJV) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. The health & wealth doctrine . . . Jehovah Witnesses doctrine of heaven on earth . . .

Error: Appeals to the carnal mind – Rom 8.7; 1 Co Denominationalism – 1 Cor. 3:3-4 (NKJV) for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? [4] For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not carnal?

Col. 2:8,18 (NKJV) Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ [18] Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

[22] Professing to be wise, they became fools, 1 Cor. 3:19 (NKJV) For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness";

Error: Appeals to the carnal mind Appeals to the desires of the flesh Appeals to pride Appeals to human wisdom Appeals to emotions Appeals to the lazy & ignorant – 2 Ti 2.15; Acts [the Bereans were willing to put in that work] 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. Acts 17:11-12

Truth Is Not Desired 10 who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions, 11 leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.” Isaiah 30:10-11

Truth Is DEMANDING Exposes sin – Jn And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. John 3:19-20

I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:34-39

Truth Is DEMANDING Exposes sin Reveals the condition of loved ones Demands that we be different from the majority – Ex 23.2; Mt 7.13,14 2 You shall not fall in with the many to do evil, nor shall you bear witness in a lawsuit, siding with the many, so as to pervert justice, Exodus 23:2 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Matthew 7:13-14

Truth Is DEMANDING Exposes sin Reveals the condition of loved ones Demands that we be different from the majority Most are looking for the easy way, the fun way, the popular way – Ps ; 2 Ti 4.2-4 1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. 2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. 4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord? Psalms 14:1-4

Truth Is DEMANDING Exposes sin Reveals the condition of loved ones Demands that we be different from the majority Most are looking for the easy way, the fun way, the popular way – Ps ; 2 Ti 4.2-4 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 2 Timothy 4:2-3

How Does Error Survive in the Face of Truth?
Due to Dishonesty Self-deception or an agenda – Heb 3.13 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin Hebrews 3:13

Due to Dishonesty Self-deception or an agenda A lack of love for the truth – 2 Thess 2.10,11; Mt 13.14,15 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11

Due to Dishonesty Self-deception or an agenda A lack of love for the truth – 2 Thess 2.10,11; Mt 13.14,15 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “‘“You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” 15 For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’ Matthew 13:14-15

Due to Dishonesty Self-deception or an agenda A lack of love for the truth Pride – can’t be wrong – 1 Tim 6.4 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 1 Timothy 6:4

Due to Dilution Spirit of compromise – 2 Kgs 17.41; 18.21; Rev 3.16; Mt 6.24 So these nations feared the Lord and also served their carved images. Their children did likewise, and their children's children—as their fathers did, so they do to this day. 2 Kings 17:41 21 Behold, you are trusting now in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 2 Kings 18:21

Due to Dilution Spirit of compromise – 2 Kgs 17.41; 18.21; Rev 3.16; Mt 6.24 [the Lord to the church at Laodicea] So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:16 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24

Psalms 119:160 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Proverbs 30:5

Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” Matthew 15:5-9

Deuteronomy 4:2 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, Revelation 22:18

Due to Dilution Spirit of compromise Selective acceptance of Scripture & “Eisegesis” Selective rejection of context & other scripture – Ro ; Jas ; Mt 23.23; 2 Tim 3.16 17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” Romans 2:17-24

Due to Dilution Spirit of compromise Selective acceptance of Scripture & “Eisegesis” Selective rejection of context & other scripture – Ro ; Jas ; Mt 23.23; 2 Tim 3.16 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. James 2:8-11

For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Matthew 23:23 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

Due to Perversion To defend error, one MUST pervert or twist scripture – 2 Pet 2.1-3; 3.16; Gal 1.6-9; Acts ; 1 Ti 4.1-2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. 2 Peter 2:1-3 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 2 Peter 3:16

Due to Perversion To defend error, one MUST pervert or twist scripture – 2 Pet 2.1-3; 3.16; Gal 1.6-9; Acts ; 1 Ti 4.1-2 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-9 [Paul’s reaction to Elymas the magician] 10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? Acts 13:10

Due to Perversion To defend error, one MUST pervert or twist scripture – 2 Pet 2.1-3; 3.16; Gal 1.6-9; Acts ; 1 Ti 4.1-2 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 1 Timothy 4:1-2

Misrepresentation When arguments cannot be sustained in the face of truth – numerous ungodly characteristics are usually manifested 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, Matthew 26:59

23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23
