General strain theory I believe that Aaron Hernandez was plagued by what is known as the general strain theory. The general strain theory was developed by Robert Agnew in The general strain theory is a derivate of the strain theory created by Robert K. Merton in The core belief of the theory is that one person is overwhelmed by stress from being successful and turns to crime as a way to vent. This can be triggered by the death of a positive influence, being surrounding by negative influences and the inability to reach a goal. The general strain theory is fairly common and as it’s the product of negative emotions. One of the biggest examples of the general strain theory in society today is people who use drugs or harassment to cope with their issues. To add, this leads me to believe that Aaron Hernandez was stricken by the general strain theory. The main reason why I believe this is because Hernandez lost his father when he was only 16 years old. Hernandez was never a troublesome teen before his father died but within a year he started to break the law and engage in fights. As, he progressed through College Hernandez was caught using drugs and failed multiple drug tests as a result. In addition, as the years passed Hernandez started to go to more clubs which was the place were all of his crimes started. In summary, I believe that Aaron Hernandez was cursed with the general strain theory and used partying and violence as a way to cope with the death of his father.
